So, the welds my brother was laying down looked like hell and it was his machine so how do I "butt in"?  After a bunch of junky welds I decidedly took over...ran a first root pass, and then weaved it...My second try ever @ MIG:I dont know what kind of welder it was (had 270 written on it), but it was Miller blue.  It had only a wire speed setting, and 7 settings for Amperage on 220.  Did a clean up of prior welds, and got all 4 vertical parts welded up similiarly.  Funny, he kept telling me that I havent the foggiest as to how to stick metal together, but had little to say after peeking at the final product.Wish I'd had TIG'd it!Last edited by DirtyLittleSecret; 06-26-2007 at 09:59 PM.ThermalArc 185MillerMatic 180 w/ AutosetVictor Cutskill Oxy/AcetyleneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38and spite!
Reply:Since this is a mtor mount that will be stressed, perhaps you could run another bead UP the mount.  I could be wrong, but it looks like you were welding down.  I don't want to start anything.   From the size of the plate, I think it needs one more pass.  Is the other side welded?Looks nice.  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Yeah, I welded it downwards.  Was told to go downwards with MIG (seemed funny since I've learned to go up with TIG and stick).  Since I've done so little of this I was'nt going to challenge the owner!  These motor mounts are mounted to scab plates that are welded 360* to the frame, and then the mounts 360* to the scab plates.  Front and rear, and  both insides and outsides got a single pass with a second weave on .25" plate.  Fortunately, the welds filled in nicely with even roundness'.  Not too full nor too shallow.I went a little heavy on the heat since I have no experience with MIG, and had little/no control over the Amps!  After a brushing it prettied up nicely though.Learning day by day...Any other advice would be appreciated! (even though I dont plan to MIG anytime soon).ThermalArc 185MillerMatic 180 w/ AutosetVictor Cutskill Oxy/AcetyleneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38and spite!
Reply:Not the best pic;however, this was done a couple days ago ... Guy just wanted me to weld it up.  I had no say in the fab.  Anyway I use standard mig short circuit transfer w/ .035 wire  75/25.   The plate was 1/4"  Something about camaro front that has been welded to a 43 coupe of some sort.  Wish I had a pic of the car.One pass on all and this was not as vert, but some angle to it...I did top 2 down.  Ok vert down again this is not exactly vert.  Yeah the corner anyway...My point is vert up is better penetration but sometimes ......well you better be good at at it.    PS the dude already painted it before I could take a picture.    weld it like you own it
