Memorial Plaque

This is the 16"x16"x0.75" Mild Steel Plate that I started with.  The penny is for size reference.This is after the plate was cut and the mill scale was ground off the top.  The edges were left rough for a more "natural" look.I wrote the letters with a sharpie and then traced them with the torch and no wire so that they would show up while I was welding.I welded the letters at the top and the leaves with Silicon Bronze and the vine and the rest of the letters with stainless.I used a O/A torch to give the metal some color

Reply:So the finished plaque was coated with clear laquer but there were several problems.  The first problem is that the laquer removed the color from the metal.  The second problem was that instead of clear laquer, the can held black laquer and we ended up spraying the black on the top of the heart.  Well, I actually liked the way it looked so we lightly sprayed the edges to give it kind of an aged look.

Reply:Taking a good pic of this plaque is near impossible with the shiny steel and the multiple layers of laquer.  All light wants to reflect, making it impossible to capture a good image.  The plaque is going to be put into a garden.  I don't think that it would be possible to hang on a wall because it weight about 40lbsFor those of you having trouble reading the saying:Sue & CarlIf our tears could build a stairwayand our memories a lane, we wouldwalk right up to Heavenand bring you home again

Reply:Carl, I am using Rustoleum Clear Laquer.  With several coats all around (plus the mill scale was left on the bottom) I hope that it will provide rust resistance.  I am going to tell my Aunt and Uncle to re-apply the laquer once a year.  Even if they let it rust, only the base metal will rust.  The stainless lettering and the bronze should be rust-resistant and stand out from the mild steel.  This plaque is a replacement for an engraved slate stone.  The slate was beautiful, but it cracked after a couple of years.  I don't think that the 3/4" steel will crack anytime soon...lol

Reply:have you considerd a set of legs to hold it up a little at a slight angel to alow the water to run off?? some thing like 3" in the back and 1" in the front. just enough to alow for run off. then you could replace the legs as needed and the plaque would last for ever. maybee make the legs more of a platform then legs so it just sits on it. it heavy enough its noyt going to blow away.looks great though. you put a lot of work into it and it shows. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
