I have a customer that wants a brushed stainless sheet for their fridge door. I have the sheet cut to size, whats the best method to get a nice brush finish on it?Dynamic MetalworksMontrose, CODynMetalworks.com
Reply:Umm.... you buy the sheet with a brushed finish already on it. You are never going to be able to get a good even finished look on a piece of sheet with hand tools. Just save yourself the agrivation now and go to your stainless supplier and ask for P4 finished material.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:I agree with sn0wboarder. It's not worth the hassle.
Reply:You could take it to a local cabinet shop and have them run it through a wide belt sander. You will probably have to put a lip on one end so it can be laid on a piece of plywood and run through
Reply:I used a orbital sander when i made a stainless winter front for my truck i think i looks cool and it left a finish that i havent seen on stainless before Attached Images
Reply:Contrary to what is so far posted, you can self brush SS. It's not easy, and it's more of an artistic thing rather than a mechanical perfection thing. For that, see SnOboarder's post. Better to buy the sheet material brushed for a whole project.But... if you have brushed SS, and want to clean the welds up and make them look brushed, there are a lot of wheels and buffers made by 3M for polishing metals that can do this job right. Different Scotchbrite wheels will give a 1,2,3,4 brushed finish, and utinized wheels are a rubberized wheel that is between a scotchbrite and a polishing wheel. They work well to scrub the wetted edges of welds where rust might start to form; they will polish and seal up those inner edges that you can't see to the naked eye. In many cases, you weld, lightly grind, then use a utinized wheel to polish the piece. After that, you take a clean scotchbrite wheel and add the brushed look back into the welds. For high polish, you might switch it around, use the scotchbrite, then the utinized wheel, then hit it with black rouge and a polishing wheel. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return. |
