Upon seeing Brianfarth's post about tigging brass I thought I'd give it a whirl...Like he had stated..Fuses good enough..But when adding filler..Thats when the real fun starts..Turns the flame "blue"..Leaves behind a white powder that comes off easy enough with a wire brush..But in the end I'd have to give the process thumbs up..Heres the subjects..1" x 3/16" just cut off in the band saw..The only filler I could find was 1/8" and I had to get all the flux off it and then wire wheel it..Beveled..Heres the D.C. straight weld..Heres the A.C. weld..(I quit early on that one..it did'nt like it at all).. Penetration....(A.C. Right..D.C. left..)But overall I'd say yes to this..If you were going to re-machine the surfaces I really don't think you could tell where the weld was..Try it sometime!!OH B.T.W.Settings...D.C.200 amps..Red end sharp..Footpedal where needed...A.C.200 amps..Red end sharp..Gas mix 38%...Footpedal.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:F.Y.I.The penetration pic is backwards..Swap right to Left...Damn drummers..dont know left from right.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Very nice.I got it in my head recently that aluminum could be welded to copper and copper can be brazed to steel so . . . copper should be able to connect aluminum to steel.I tried welding aluminum to copper very quickly the other day (insufficient prep) and it sort of worked (a bit on the brittle side) but I was in a rush so didn't really give it a proper try.  What do you think?Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.

Reply:On AC it looks like a crap-tacular 6010 weld   I really havn't welded anything other then mild steel.  I think the most complex stuff I've had to deal with was normalized steel.  I've done some aluminum with mig, but not much...and it was all just for sh*ts and giggles.  ...the fumes didn't affect me much *twitch* When I get back into school for my "A" though, it'll be nice to do some non-ferrous metals!Last edited by mb_welder; 07-06-2007 at 05:24 AM.
Reply:You were smoking hot at 200.  But it looks like it almost fused all the way though.  I tried a little AC, but I got scared and went back to DC.  But I'm wondering what kind of gas you were talking about "Gas mix 38%...".  I've only used Argon and Helium.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:I wouldn't use CO2 on any TIG application.. Always straight argon for me.  But I did work at a s.s. tank building place that used helium on their seam welder.  I asked why use such an expencive gas when argon would do the same job and they told me that helium produced more of a consistant weld.  I'm not sure how much truth there is to this on s.s.  I've never had any issues fusing plates with argon.  I do remember reading somewhere that helium is an outdated process.  It requires higher amps to produce the same welds that argon can achieve at lower settings, so you save on both ends.  I can lay out shiney dimes just fine with pure argon, and especially well with zirconiated tungsten.  But I'll have to try a mix one of these days.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:All of my "students" get to try straight and mixed..Every one of them said the same thing.. "What a huge diffrence"..Yeah if you ever get the opportunity..DO IT!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
