I have some pictures of some drawings i need convertered to a file i can give to a guy with a CNC to get it cut.Its beyond my skills but ill be happy to pay someone else to do it.
Reply:Do you need .dxf files or .STEP?I use Solidworks.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:Doesnt Matter to me.The guy who is going to cut it has mastercam so he can importa antying.
Reply:How complex are the drawings? Need 2D or 3D? Will they just be for CAM software or do you need working drawings?Doesn't Mastercam have drawing capabilities?AlA man is judged by what's between his legs...always ride a good horseMiller DialArc HFLincoln Classic 300DThermal Arc 181iPowermax 45Scotchman Ironworker(2) BridgeportsOkomota Surface GrinderAutoCAD 2010
Reply:socoj2,I'd like to make a few remarks about your images, if you can spare a few minutes?  I have a CAD service, and have done many thousands of sheets of conversion from images files or scans to vector files.  I'm not volunteering to help with the work. I'm just explaining some things that might not be obvious if you haven't been down this path before?Images or picture files are made up of [millions of] dots- they're called raster files where every single dot on the screen or picture is a color or black or white.  "These files won't cut"- they have to be converted to vector or lines and arcs so the NC machine can understand the beginning and end of the lines, arcs and curves. The process that is time consuming is getting images and pictures (rasters) to lines, arcs and curves (vectors).  CNC machines all need to have some vector file to convert to G-code or "cutting directions file".The work/effort/time/issue is not converting from one vector file like AutoCAD or Solid Works or Rhinoceros, or Alibre to CNC : the work in these cases or obstacle to " just converting" a file is getting the image file 'traced'/converted/redrawn/"vectored".  If the files or images or pictures of drawings you have are in raster files then they have to be redrawn into vector files first, then, your CNC code generator can work with those vector files from many different programs.  Most folks would load the images or pictures or scans of drawings into the vector drawing program and trace over the image redrawing using vector or lines tools.  This can be done semi-automatically by Scan-to-CAD or other raster to vector conversion programs.  Then you'd 'clean up' or edit the final vector file to make sure its what your original image file contained.  A file that shows a series of right angle cuts with a few circles cutout inside those rectangles is a simple task to convert from raster to vector.  The vector file can be 'checked' by reading the notes on the raster image:  circle diameter=...:  and rectangle cut size= .....     are all easy to verify. Not so with curves unless they're arcs. The main problem is with curves, image files or pictures of curves, typically require work with Bezier curves or NURBs in the vector CAD program and that can take some fairly serious time depending on the images?  IF your images are pictures of rectangles, straight lines and other uniform geometry (?) that is one case.  If, on the other hand, the pictures of drawings have curves and (arcs and circles are as easy as lines) then the resulting vector files MUST be printed to overlay to the original curves or there is no way to verify they're identical.  That is time consuming and if you're not experienced, very time consuming.I hope your files are nice simple uniform geometry that can be overlaid by CAD vector shapes of easily defined shape and size?  If they are Non-Uniform-Rational-BSplines (NURBs) or other complex curves; then the entire project is not as simple as tracing with a CAD program.I hope you complete your conversion with minimal effort that results in high quality, accurate cuts, and provide this post to help you make wise choices in that process.Cheers,Kevin Morin
