How to make a boat watertight.Step one.  Run a bead of 6010.  Wirewheel it and grind it down smoothCover with wire and walk away. How NOT to make a boat watertight.Fall 12 feet on your back onto a piece of pipe.  In conclusion.  My back and ribs hurt like i've never hurt before.  But I still got a full day of work in.
Reply:That's an unapproved method of testing pipe welds. Hope you're OK. Get yourself checked out if you have any doubts.
Reply:i build the hull in a jig. Once done i fill it with water to see if it leaks.
Reply:Stop being so clumsy!!  Ribs are no laughing matter...  Had a few broken playing hockey here and there... But the best ribs are done in vinegar so I'm told...Feel better.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Zap, i've broken one before when I was a kid.  3 months of solid pain and nothing the doc could do.  Still gives me a jolt of pain from time to time.aDreamSoReal, it would be hard to fill a 292' boat that has a 24' deep hull with water.  :P  We use soap and pressurized water/air and check for bubbles.  I haven't seen the process in action yet, but i've heard it's a long tedious job.  Not one I am interested in taking any part in.  I'll stick to melting steel.
Reply:Nice work, but i'm curious, do you run your 6010 roots, then come back later and run your wire or do you always have a stinger as well as a feeder there at all times?I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:have seen boats filled with water and still not leak, but when put afloat they will leak seems that water will find its way inhave fun and good luck

Reply:Couldn't stand the pain anymore and went to the doctor today.  Rib isn't broken, but he said I may have a bulged/ruptured disk in my lower back.  But then he sent me home with some pills and physical therapy.  You'd think if that type of injury was in question he'd send me to get an MRI ASAP.Lower back above pelvic bone is killing me every time I move.  Tingling sensation radiating down the right side of my right leg and all the way down to the top right of my right foot.
Reply:bulged disks suck. i have been going through lower back sh!t for about 6 months now. my pelvis was twisted, and my spine was about 12 degrees off square!! one leg was about an inch longer than the other. result = possible bulged disk, and sciatica (sciatic nerve being pinched and causing pain all the way to the feet, and numbness of the toes). it sucks in a bad way.i feel your pain man, feel better! And btw...whiskey tends to help with the pain  "Ask not for whom the bone bones, it bones for thee" - Bender

Reply:Maybe you should go see a neurological (sic) specialist. You might have a broken back also. I feel for you. Last year, we were testing a lifeboat, and the deckhand who was checking the distance above the water mis-judged and when the boat was released, we dropped between 8-10 feet, hitting the beltline of the ship on the way down. A two ton boat hits the water really hard, and I ended up with a crushed L2 vertebre and two herniated discs. Naturally I didn't think I was actually injured and insisted on cntinuing work. Better minds prevailed and I was taken to the hospital, where we found the problems. I was off work for 6 months and still haven't really recovered. This rambling was to say that if you continue in pain, you shopuld really have an MRI.Also, your welds sure look better than the welds used to build the ship I work on!
Reply:Thanks for the advice Yamahammer.  I really was afraid to open an insurance claim with the company because I know that "He who gets hurt gets laid off first".  It happened to me last year.  I was steering a 6 foot long drill bit into a concrete anchor and got my glove wrapped around the bit and my hand went with it.  I told the safety guy on the job I was gonna wait it out.  But that night it hurt too bad so I called him and asked if it would be ok to go to the Urgent Care and get an x-ray.  He said sure.  Next day I was given a termination slip.  Their excuse was because of "Excessive Absenteeism" from some chronic bronchitis I had a few months prior where I missed a few days of work.  It was obviously from my injury.  My foreman was fired the same day because he had too many people working under him get hurt so the connection is obvious to see.I didn't want to see a doc yesterday on company insurance so I went home and dealt with the pain to see if I could shake it.  Later that night it was hurting so bad I was going to go under my own insurance but didn't have the $25 on hand to pay the co-pay so I caved and went this morning after working a few hours.I am actually real paranoid I will be placed on the Chopping Block because of this.  I outwork most of the guys on that job burning 30lbs of wire a day and my welds look real good but I am still worried with a wife and kid to take care of.

Reply:That is terrible.I have had a few injuries over the past 23 years of shipboard work. I tend to get really vocal if someone suggests that I am accident prone. My philosophy is, if you work hard in an industrial environment, you will get beat and banged up. Luckily I am in a very strong union and have had their backing.I hope everything works out well for you.
Reply:Your company insurance is there to help you.  The company's insurance  is looking for reasons to dismiss your claim if you don't do things correctly.  You should get check out thoroughly.  You are awfully young to be creating a life long problem for yourself. You appear to be a talented and motivated welder.  If welding is what you want to do, then I'm sure there are other companies in Washington who will hire you. hope you heal quickly and fully.
Reply:After reading all this...You need Dr Mario!!!Worlds best Chiropractor....Go see one..And you'll be doing this before you know it  ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Chiropractor smiropractor.  Been to them before for my neck.  The back cracking and massage therapy was fine, but the pills were the only thing that took the pain away.
