A local cookie manufacturer likes to whip up all their dry goods ahead of time, which takes it's toll on their s.s. paddles (that we made a few years ago) but they still don't hold up. Every 6 months or so, they come in broke.. here are some photos of one that I repaired today.I ground some of the crack out in this photo. To avoid warping the collar, I used some heat gel and an aluminum pipe that fit in the hole pretty snugAnd after everything was all done. Reply:Oh yeah.. it took me about 1 3/4 hours and I found alot more stress cracking around the whole base... It's all made of 316 s.s.. So I am working on a bid to replace the whole bottem end of it. It's not going to be cheap.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:That is a really first class repair job. You had some really good puddle control. Very nice. Paul. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Nice job..Next time you could brace the crap out of it by cutting some S/S pipe down the middle and using it as a patch...Complete weld all the way around..No more fatigue..No more repair work...Charge accordingly......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Nice welds. Sorry to hear it didn't hold up.
Reply:Purdy!DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:It's too late to brace it because the cracking has gone pretty far both directions. I asked them if it had to be that thin in the middle and they said no, so I'm going to go with 1" thick around that area. Right now it's 1/2" and that isn't working out so well. The more I think about it, it will cost a little under 2k to make a new one at our current s.s. costs. The paddle is a little less than 2' long overall. But cutting that whole section out and replacing it will be less than half that.. As I recall, they were all machined parts with slip in fit to the base of the paddle.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:Is that last picture after you cleaned the surface off? Do you have a picture of it immediately after the welds? I'm trying ot get a feel for the proper base metal colors after a SS tig weld. thanksEddie
Reply:No I don’t. The parent metal was getting close to blue, but the welds themselves were pretty shiny mostly because they were short and had plenty of gas coverage. I was getting pretty hot twards the end. I had to cool things down 2 times in the sink beforehand.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom. |
