What are some good boots for welding? I'm currently looking at Matterhorn 10" waterproof safety toe boots, http://workingperson.com/products/22...ts_102494.html . Do I need them to be shock-resistant as well?
Reply:i try to look for a heat resistant sole, minimal artificial materials, good protection around the toe, and of course comfort. welding and cutting are pretty tough on boots so either get some spats or gaiters to protect your expensive pair for longer, or buy cheaper ones more often.my 2c anyway.....

Reply:i think those boots would not be good.the laces are a bad idea because they will trap hot metal and burn up. get some pull-on boots .why you need waterproof insulated  boots is your business but they will be hot.
Reply:In my opinion those boots will be incredibly uncomfortable with the height, and as stated before your going to go through laces like crazy. I wear Dakota's with the Met guard those goes over the entire set of laces. Extremely comfortable and STRONG boots. Their quite decent in the cold too. Although this past winter at -60 they didnt seem to cut it hahaha!heres a link!  http://www2.marks.com/productdetails...3FOpenDocument
Reply:I  use steel toe Red Wing boots without laces, smooth surface, nothing for sparks to catch on and cause problems.Avoid synthetics of any kind around welding, if they burn the fumes are toxic, and the molten plastic can stick to your skin and burn you.  Stick to leather, cotton, or wool.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge

Reply:i bought a pair of rocky pull ons, cart remember the name, but they are the best boots i ever had, no laces to worry about burning and the soles are good too. the first year i had them i worked at a factory with all cement and steel grating. i was buying boots every 6 months from the wear at work, but these thing still look new. oh, i think they are wellingtons, for some reason that sticks out. they also come off quick in the event you get a spark burn through your pants and fall down the boot.
Reply:Hathorn or Whites boots and put leather laces and gel insoles in em and you will be set. Rev

Reply:The best boots I have worn for welding are Justin ropers, steel toe with no laces.  They are comfortable and durable.
Reply:I have Georgia 10" Wellington pull on boots and they are super comfy and I lover them.  I can wear them for 10 hours straight and have never gotten a blister or sore feet.  I highly recommend them.
Reply:I vote for pull ons. No laces to burn up and no lace-tung gap to allow sparks in. If you go with lace ups, keep an extra pair of laces in your lunch box. It's a pain in tha a$$ trying to finish the day with burnt up lacing. The last pair I bought are Wolverines and came from Tractor Supply. The carry all the major brands and offer a 2 year replacement warranty if the boots have a major failure. Reply:Can you guys please answer my question:1. Would blousing my boots with a bootstrap help eliminate the lace-tongue gap?2. What about lineman or mining boots, are they good?

Reply:I wear 6" Red Wing 2406 boots.  I've never been a fan of pull-ons, I like the extra ankle support lace-ups give.  The tongue goes side to side up just past the four eyelets, nothing can get inside the boots except through the top.  The boots are comfortable, I have no problems wearing them for 14+ hours at a stretch.  I wear my work pants a size longer so that even if I am crouched they will always cover the top of my boots, had an incident several years ago.  One nice thing about Red Wing's is that replacement laces are free.  I keep spares at home and in my toolbox at work.  Repairs like stitching are also covered, but you'll be without that pair of boots for a week or two while Red Wing repairs them.  Never had anything burn through my laces, they always be wear out on one of the eyelets.  I am a firm believer in steel toes.  I had a ~1000lb part fall from about 4' and land on my toe.  Walked away with nothing worse than a twisted ankle.
Reply:I can't wear pull ons because they pull my socks into my toes and restrict movement, therefore occupying all of my concentration on how uncomfortable and claustrophobic my toes actually are.And I have to wear 100% waterproof because a short time after my feet get wet while trapped inside footwear, they really start to itch, really bad, and I become a raving b*tch! And since I have such a wide foot, I can't wear safety toes everyday or else I will get callus' the size of marbles on the sides of my big toes.So I switch between RedWings models regular 414 and safety 4414(same boot, one with steel toe), "H" width. However I am very dissapointed in them. The regular pair needed to be resoled after 9 mos. because the left sole separated from the boot. A year after that the right sole separated the same way. (Note: they were both resoled after the left separated.)I will give RedWing one more chance, however I will buy a more expensive pair. That is, unless I find a better product elsewhere. They are not waterproof but these Sears Die Hard boots are the most comfortable boots ever. I mean like slippers. I had to stop because of the water issue."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
