Hi all. I'm new! Been welding for years now as a hobby and recently bit the bullet and purchased a mig conversion for my Lincoln pak 100. I couldn't find anything to strap my Argon tank down with on the market so I made my own. This secures it to the back of my truck bed and It will not move once I strap it down. I'll have to redesign this at a later time because reaching and yanking the tank out of the brace once you fill it, is a pita. So I plan to make the two front arms (guess is what i call it) pivot up and down like a latch so i can shimmy or slide the tank out. It will be out of steel next time round'.What do you guys think? How do you carry your tanks?
Reply:I'm sorry but thats not going to pass inspection.. If it was made of steel then you would have a chance..I'm willing to bet if you let me drive..I'll have that apart in 10 min.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:(LOL) I'm not that rough on my driving. Just transporting the tank, so I don't think it's that bad. BTW who will inspect?
Reply:Hmmm, nope.  Safety caps do work, but that is not gonna hold it if you roll that truck.Nice carpentry work though.
Reply:=) thankx. I do that as a hobby too. So how do you guys transport your tanks when you refill your tanks?
Reply:I lay mine flat in the bed and wedge an old shoe in the side to keep it from rolling around so much.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:I always thought that you weren't suppose to have it lying on its side? If that is the case, I don't know why in the hell I put this bracket together =)
Reply:Acetylene tanks need to settle after laying on their side, give em half hour or hour. Argon is fine.City of L.A. Reply:Beat me too it, stupid distractions while typing.
Reply:Straight gas cylinders don't care what side they are transported on. They should be used in the correct orientation, but transport is non importante.
Reply:Using compressed gas cylinders, the orientation doesn't matter at all. It's just gas!Acetylene, propane, and CO2 -do- matter, they have liquids in the tank.  Acetylene a LOT!But argon, oxygen, nitrogen, C25, tri-mix, whatever, if it is a compressed GAS the orientation of the cylinder doesn't matter at all.  Useage -or- transportation.
Reply:I have always cut a notch in two skids to transport my cylinders.  The two skids are nailed together with two 2X4's.  A strap then goes over the top to secure it down.  As mentioned, on acetylene, I wait 1/2 a day or so before use (after it is uprighted). This may not be the best way, but it has worked for me for some time now. Thanks,JasonMillermatic 210 w/ SpoolgunMiller 375 ExtremeMiller Trailblazer 250GMiller AEAD 200-LEVictor Journeyman O/A
Reply:I learn something new everyday=) Thanks guys. On a side note, I think I may have made my welding cart too short to accommodate the new tank.Man this isn't cool...
Reply:Weld some more. Right there between the wheels! ^Last edited by tanglediver; 08-09-2007 at 08:23 PM.City of L.A. Reply:It's actually welded pretty good. I ground most of it down flat. It's welded inside and out. I want to make another one now. This time, I'll get some 1x2 stock to use instead of the bed frame rails.
Reply:I just throw my tank of argon in the passenger seat and hope I don't get in to serious of a wreck.
Reply:mpower,When tanglediver said "Weld some more.", I think he was trying to tell you that you have a welder and can just ADD a platform for the tank onto your cart.  Just weld it to the cart, in between the wheels.Watch out for balance and CG (center of gravity) if you have something (the tank or whatever)  'outside' of the wheels.
