Beat the high cost of Vise Grip

No, they aren't American made. No, I wouldn't probablyuse these for super heavy duty clamping 8 hours a day. However, I bought three 2-packs of 11" swivel head Pittsburg clamps from Harbor Freight on sale for $5.99 (that's only $17.97 for all 6). Using some 1/8"x1" strap I extended the throat to 15". I smacked the rivet that the arms pivot on a few times and it took out all the side to side slop so the faces match up all the time. They give me all the clamping force I need for holding body panels together to weld, etc. For less than $4 per clamp, it is less than 10% the cost of Vise Grip. I'm going to get a few more while they are on sale and make up some 24" throat ones, I'll probably use 1 1/4"x1/8" for those. Reply:Good idea, but I don't know if you will be able to put any real torque on those because of the leverage working against you with that length.

Reply:That's using the old brain bucket.  Very good!I will say this though.  Vise Grips are a very good long term investment.  I still use some that are over 20 years old and they work fine.

Reply:I buy quality when I can afford quality but when I know I'm going to be chopping it up for special purpose or prototype I'll buy cheapo every time. Can't force myself to cut the ends off a $16 to $30 pair of vice grips.

Reply:I just got a sale flyer from Harbor Frieght yesterday and quickly looked in it for the deal on those clamps.  They list 2pc Pittsburgh 11" clamp set #37006-1RWA in there but they are $9.99 a set...  Any ideas on how to find the $5.99 price?
