Hey guys...Well, last night, i went out and played around with some 6011. I couldnt really decide between 75 amps and 90 on the buzzbox, so i went back and forth somewhat...Anyway, im clueless here, and tried whatever you call this, this not dragging the rod thing for the first time ever last night, so go easy on me... Haha...So how do they look?? And also, how does one decide between using 6011 and 6013?? Ive figured that 6011 has better penetration, and 6013 and looks better, but thats all i know. Im assuming that one would use 6013 for really thin steel, and is 6013 a drag rod, or one for this roll of dimes look thing?? Thanks everyone And also, this rod has sat in an open cardboard box for more then a year, if that makes any difference... lol...
Reply:Some of them look a little cold, try making longer runs, and work on your rhythm. Move ahead 1/4-inch, back an 1/8-inch. Or how ever you want, doesn't really matter what you do, just do it consistently. Reply:I think you have the ideaNow concentrate on "splitting" the puddle. When you whip out of the puddle, try to go back into the puddle half the distance..  In other words, try to build the metal relatively close to the back end of the puddle."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:you are making individual discreet dimes, which is what whipping will do..you get out of the puddle for a bit  letting it freeze..you can accomplish the same with making little circles..
Reply:CEP Nice beads, I wished my 6010/11 beads came out that nice regularly.Note 6011 is basically the AC version of the DC only 6010 and thus they usually get lumped together as 6010/11.As far as why you'd pick 6010/11 over say 6013... 6010/11 is an all position, deep penetrating fast freeze rod. It's good for burning thru crap that other rods can't tolerate, like rust, oil and paint. It's also good for doing thin metal because the puddle freezes so fast (not that I can weld thin sheet metal well with it, some like DDA52 can). It's often used to lay material in an open root like in pipe. That pass basically creates a backer that protects the 7018 on the next pass from contamination from the back, since open root 7018 usually has to be ground out and welded up from the back to avoid porosity on that side. 6013 is a light penetration all position rod. It's considered a "drag" rod and is very easy to use. It's a nice rod to start to learn with, but usually it's not used as much any more in the field as Low hydrogen rod like 7018 has basically replaced it. Since it's easy to run and gives a good appearance, it's good for basic small projects for hobbyists as they learn. As a 60 series rod it's a bit weaker than the 70 series rods like 7014 or 7018. Usually it's best to then learn and move to 7018 for most projects, as it's probably the rod used most often..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I have a question about 7018.  I am still using 6010 and 6013, partly because I figure that I don't need to worry about keeping the rods dry.  I live in a pretty dry climate, Colorado.  Do I need to worry about keeping 7018 rods dry?  How can I do that?   I suspect that 7018 welds would look more attractive than 6013 welds.I don't use 5 pounds of rod in a year, so moisture could build up, even in a container that was fairly airtight.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:Old 7018 rods will probably still weld afterward as long as they are not kept in your goldfish bowl. I found one that got misplaced from the 1990's out in the garage. It was a high quality rod that burned better than my brand new lesser quality rods. Just buy small boxes of one or two pounds each, and keep them dry. For better results, preheat the rods to 250 degrees for half an hour to dry them off.City of L.A. Reply:with 4918 rods i find it depends a lot on the brand as to how much moisture they will tolerate, how much they absorb and how fast
Reply:Work at making your welds smooth not rough. Most pipe welds are done smooth and thats where the money is. Smooth hold close arc, almost dragging and dont breathe. Just kidding on the breathing. Just relax and let her rip.
