I just purchased a tig welder. Lincoln Precision Tig 225. Since my garage is attached to my house, the power main and ground are shared. I'd like to not do any damage to my tv's, computers, etc. Does it make sense to use a separate copper grounding rod for the Tig welder? I can get about 50 ft away from the shared house, garage ground rod. Do you think this will make any difference? Thanks
Reply:I have found that the High Frequency wipes out the AM radio reception while it is on, but does no permanent damage. I believe that even stick welding without HF wipes out AM radio. I have all the usual electronics in my house, computer, TV, satellite dish, etc. I work out of a garage attached to the house.I would not worry about any permanent damage.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:No need for seperate ground. Wire the machine's plug properly for the machine and connect to a properly wired outlet and no problem, at least none for me anyways, other than the AC HF fuzzing up the shop radio reception a bit while the arc is on. The computers haven't been affected and one has been used only about 10 feet from the machine while welding without any interference, even on a wireless internet network.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I have my welder grounded to a cold water pipe in the house with no problem. I do have to say that I only get about 2 years out of a hot water heater when my neighbors get 8 to 10 years. I don't know if there is any connection or just a coincidence. When I first got my welder, syncrowave 250, I had the feed line stapled to the main beam of the house. At one point it ran close, 3', to one of my alarm system wires. Each time I welded the alarm would signal the police. My alarm guy siad that either the high freeq. or the rf magnetic field was setting off the alarm. I moved the alarm wire and solved that problem.Steve |
