I've gotten pretty used to my fixed lens and the weld pool is a nice amber color.I tried a buddies radnor 24s and I liked the speed of the lens but don't like that greenish hue of the weld pool. I was just wondering if any of yall know of a good autolens with a amber or blueish color? That'd be great.Or if you have another autolens, what color is your weld pool.
Reply:In every AD lens, it's been green. You are looking through a liquid crystal display and too my knowledge they all use a green tinted substrate.I guess it's personal preference cause the arc looks just fine when it's green or any other color as long as I can see what I need to.

Reply:I think miller has one with a blue screen.

Reply:i have a radnor cobra which i wont use because it flaaashes  and has that green color. when i came to my senses and started tigginh again with my good old $40 huntsman helemt with gold lens, i saw a white arc for the first time...the cobra  made it look like a contaminated tungsten..death to the ad hood.
Reply:Jackson NexGen.  Amber color, closest to a gold lens.  I couldn't see a dang thing with the old Miller hood with a green tint.
Reply:I used a gold lens recently. Any ideas about where to find one? I guess I could get a Nexgen.
Reply:I think the Miller Digital Elite has an amber auto-darkening lens.  but it is also a $300+ helmet.

Reply:The Jackson "Boss" has an amber color, About the same color as Lincoln's regular lens which I always preferred. That big window is great since I wear progressive bifocals and don't have to mess with a cheater lens. It's kind of heavy compared to the Miller Elite that I also use but I prefer the Jackson. I like the color and the image thru it is chrystal clear. It's a $300 hood.

Reply:Reading up on the Speedglass 9100. It's like the Lexus of welding hoods [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmMdcvG_6xI[/ame]I bet this thing weighs a ton. My grandfather would have laughed so much if he could have seen the hoods we have todayLast edited by tx-pipeliner; 01-26-2010 at 09:07 PM.
Reply:As far as I know, you can get AD lenses in any color. Just need to find the brand that has what your looking for. I had a cheap hood from Northern Tool that had a blue hue,(no complaints). Then I recently acquired a Lincoln Electric hood that has a greenish/amber hue. I really like the new one, seems like I can see the pool a lot better. Oh, and yea, Speedglass is the Lexus of hoods, just look at the prices.Last edited by papabear; 01-26-2010 at 10:10 PM."SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.
Reply:Jackson NexGen or Boss. Both have excellent optics with a "gold lens type" color. Very durable hoods and most importantly......, Made In The USA!!Miller XMT-3502 Lincoln Power Mig 140C (One w/ dedicated spoolgun)Jackson NexGen / Miller Digital EliteMiller S32P SuperWeldcraft 17fv & 9fv Tig TorchVictor & Purox O/ALincoln Ranger 9Fairly Cold Beer!!

Reply:I have two Optrel helmets. One is green like most AD hoods, the other I can see color through. The color one is my preferred tigging helmet.
Reply:Have any of you used the ArcOne S240? If so, what color is the weld pool in that lens ?I used that Radnor 24S shade 10 for about 2-3 hours today. My eyes are burning. I'm either going to goto a shade 12 autolens (if i can find an auto with an amber pool) or just go back to a fixed lens. The autolense shade seem to be understated? Autolens shade 10 defn does not feel like a fixed lens shade 10. Thanks for mentioning a bunch of great lenses with different weld  color pools but I only use two hoods but my hoods only fit singles (1 pancake and 1 egg)Last edited by tx-pipeliner; 01-28-2010 at 11:15 PM.

Reply:Hey guys, I just received my Jackson Nexgen hsl100 in the mail today.  Im a little disappointed because it clearly has a green lens.   Im baffled because everything I have read (including the description on the Jackson site) states that it has an amber lens.Does anyone know if they changed their lens recently?  I'll be following up with the distributor and/or Jackson on Monday, if I cant get an amber lens I will have to return it since that was the basis for my purchase....
Reply:i notice in some of the nexgen  writeups it says amber in grind mode only...
Reply:Bought the NexGen 3n1 in july, hate it, too heavy, can't see, and have had the headgear replaced already. The rear adjusting knob over time seems to end up at the 10:00 or 11:00 position vs 12:00 when new. New Speedglas 9001x arrived yesterday, headgear is Fantastic.

Reply:My opinion is that the shade color is green - because in the light spectrum, green is the easiest color to see.I think we ran into that back in Nam where our tracers were orange and the VC was using green.  The green is actually brighter in a dark location. As far as auto welding helmets goes, I don't like them for two reasons.First is that the shade goes dark when you start grinding and I like my clear lens on my fibermetal helmet and have gotten so used to it that I refuse to change. The other issue I had was that when I strike an arc with a auto helmet - I was getting that flash and when you do a lot of tacking, that flash burns your eye balls and makes my eyes hurt.  I actually got to the point of where I had to close my eyes when I did a tack to start it before I could look out the lens.Technology isn't always for the better.
