Customer brought in a rather large Hyd.Cylinder for us to repair..13" O.D.  90" longThey could not get the end cap off so they beat the bajeebers out of it and ended up splitting the cap and ruining the threads on the cylinder at the same time..  Tube..Old Cap..Notice the welded on "beat it" bar.. Uh huh..Threads on the tube..New threads I had to make..The welding part to the job is next.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:OK..There was no way to hold it in the 4 jaw without some help.. So with the help of some 1 1/2" X 3" angle cut off at 4" this is what I came up with..Start by cleaning up the weld area..Attach angle to make a "platform"Tigged Vert. UP..Do the same to the other side..Here is the top weld..And now we have the ultimate way to grab this and spin it..One set of opposite jaws turned around and one set the "normal" way..I'm making the new end cap now..But that will have to wait 'till morning...I get all the fun jobs.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Did they attempt to cut it off - the slot near the "beat it" bar ?John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:It looked as if they got part way thru it and decided to stop so they could save the threads..Did'nt work.. I would have just heated it up... ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Finished  it up today..What a pain in the rear!!Its not like I can just pick up the tube and try it in the cap to see if the threads are to size..Careful measurements dont mean crap when making custom threaded parts..So to try it I had to take it out of the machine..Try it on the tube..Only went on by 1/2 thread.. Back in the lathe..True it in..Pick up the thread..Take a few more passes..Try it again..Back in the machine.. Try one more time..Ahhhh 3'rd times a charm..If you think this is easy then think again..It's a very fine line between "It don't fit"To "Now its way too loose"But I won the game.. New cap..Threads are 10.850-12..Threads that took 3 shots at it..But now "GET IT OUT OF HERE!!!!!"   I get all the fun jobs......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
