OH MAN I JUST F* UP..I PUT IT ON THE WRONG FORUM..SORRY NEW 2 THIS. So if anyone can help..PLZ don't hesitateWell Hey what's up y'all..First time posting so go easy on me..Well I went to go apply for a local company.  So "a little back ground on me" I never went to school for welding everything I know was by working and asking questions, at the shop i started when I was 15" So I go apply to the little shop around the corner and I see when I came in a bunch of certificates on the little office by the well known university in the town. So before I could even apply to the company I was given a written test I felt soo stupid but the questions, the vocabulary i was like wtf..He don't need a welder he needs an  welder with a MASTERS just to fix chairs but I know I can perform better than majority of people who has a certification experience not in school but the real deal in the real world...So I can't afford to go to school but this is what I know working hard. Does anyone recomends a book were i can learn the right literature about welding? Cause I'm  Welding feeds my family and I just hope that I could get more knowledgeable in welding.Last edited by lalinzki; 09-05-2007 at 02:33 PM.
Reply:I don't know everything, but according to my supervisors at my jobs, I do a really good job.  I never went to school, I fell into the career because the last company I worked for was willing to train me.  Well I got little training from the company, but I wanted to learn and luckily there a few people there that knew a stinger from their ***.  I shut up and listened to them whenever they offered advice. So after 2 years of doing my job and learning the best way to do it through the years of experience of others, I went to a better company, took my certification for structural and passed and make good money.  Since I've been welding, I've seen the "school boys" come and go.  At my last company not a single one of them made it past 2 months.  They couldn't weld that great and they weren't willing to learn because "hey I went to school, this is the right way"My advice, if you can weld, find a job that that's what they are looking for.  Always be willing to take some helpful advice, there is always someone who's better than you so the best you can do is soak up any knowledge brought forward to you.
Reply:Welcome to the forum. You can learn all the welding terminology here by reading. ORA decent book to read is this one: http://www.amazon.com/Welders-Handbo...9023797&sr=8-4John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:There's been a bunch of the "school boys" come and go at our shop also.  They're pretty cocky until their sh!t starts falling apart DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:I would also suggest the book "Metals and How to Weld Them."  Its published by Lincoln Electric, and is one of the single most beneficial books I've ever owned.

Reply:Well first of all, I'm 26 and yeah I'm a sensitive welder "WTF"..No guys honesty is the best thing y'all can give me, other than that is bull****...you want to say something about education and test well shoot or practicaly anything that can help us hard workers go ahead don't hold back...That's why I wanted some real answers from real welders. Thanks for the books y'all recomended, I already order some online...“I'd always been scared of people with tertiary education and high intellects in case they found me wanting. Reply:Learning stuff is good.No matter how you do it.I didnt go to school for welding, but I do have a whole shelf full of books, and I look at em when I have a question.I am a big fan of Richard Finch- he writes short, simple books with lots of information, and he really knows his ****.His "Welders Handbook" is really good.I also just picked up a cheap used copy of "How to Weld Damn Near Everything", from Monster Garage, and, except for all the pictures of Jesse James, its actually a really good welding book. (I would prefer pictures of his wife- any of his wives, actually). That said, I have to say that I have hired a couple of dozen guys to weld for me over the years, and the "school guys" have always been a lot better than the no school guys. Course, I only hire "school guys" with 2 year AA degrees from community colleges. I have been lucky enough to live near two great community colleges, (LA Trade Tech in LA, and Bellingham Technical College in Bellingham WA) and known the instructors, so I can call em up and say, "whose your best student?" and then hire em.In both cases, these are cheap, state schools, with really hardcore welding programs. You gas weld for a whole semester, until you can do it in your sleep, before they even let you near a machine with a plug on it. Its been 12 years since I left LA, so I dont know if Trade Tech is still as good, but when Jerai and Don at BTC say a guy (or girl- the best tig welder I ever hired was female) can weld, they can weld. As well as read prints, measure, cut parts the right size, use an ironworker, a plasma cutter, a gas torch, and a bunch of other stuff. So dont be dissing "school guys".From the right school, they kick butt.
Reply:I'm sure from the right school they are great but the one here in town was a joke.  I wanted to sign up just to see what this "instructor" was telling the guys.  They would start and not even know how to set their machine.  There was one guy that was bragging about what a good weldor he was and some steps FELL out of a ladder he built,  did yall hear me FELL OUT!!!!!!! A 4" solid weld and it fell out.   And he was certified.  He lost his job over that one though.  These guys should look into the courses before signing up.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:It takes all kinds. I found a booklet I bought when I started welding as a hobby. The receipt was inside the cover and it is dated 1994. I practiced for 10 years on my own pidgeon krap projects with only a slight grasp of welding with E6013 on AC (my machine has no DC). Then I went to work at my current job and was introduced to mig. A bunch more crappy projects later I found a chance to get into school and never looked back! Now I can't even talk welding at work, they think I'm bragging, ah well! Maybe a little. I wish I had tried learning a bit earlier in life with OAW and SMAW though.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:Well I can't Diss Anyone until I seen there work and trust me my grandma could do better ...but like I said majority of the welder kats that  have school can't handle work or they get like weld fright and stuff but when it comes down 2 getting the job done they're the first ones to brag and the first ones to get fired...This is the truth from my own P.O.V. Like I said no disrespect just what I seen in my years of working with REAL EDUCATED PERSONEL...laters
