Which E70xx rod to use for decking?

Hi all,I've got a hospital job that requires welding existing decking to existing framing (circa 1953) via 1/2" puddle welds and seam welds.The specs call out for "E70xx" rod.I would like to know which is the better E70 rod to go with for this project.  Its a lot of welding (2 areas x 1120 sq ft each).  I have only ever used 7018 in the 70 series rod, I didnt know if there was a better/easier choice here...?Thanks.
Reply:if there's anything left of that 50 year old material i suspect it will be  less than pristine and youd be better off  using 6010..maybe if you ask they'll allow it. most engineers that spec"70xx" have no clue anyway..if they knew what they wanted they'd fill in those x's...

Reply:Grind it good and clean and use 7018. Stornger weld than 6010 or 11. These r farmer rods.Not much used  in construction any more
Reply:6010 is anything but a farmers rod. It is the most used rod on pipe in the world.I would go with 7010, as Desert Riser said, it's more aggressive than a 7018 just in case the metal is not perfect.
Reply:I would also use 7010. You should be able "burn" through the decking and weld it to the structure with little or no prep work. Burn through the deck and weld in a circular motion until you have a 1/2" diameter weld bead.
Reply:7018 on sheet decking?? Good gawd. Steel....have you ever welded decking?Gfourth, if it was my job, I'd submit 6022's are a substitution and see if it would fly. They are a decking rod only. If not, the 7010 is about as good a suggestion as any. Reply:If you can get the engineer to sign off on it 6022 is a rod SPECIFICLY made for puddle welding decking.   I have had moderate success using NR-211 in my LN-25 for puddle welding decking.    For large decking jobs i get my hilti rep involved and get him to "sell" the engineer on using powder actuated pins to fasten the decking.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:gfourth  -  In my experience a puddle weld is burning through a thin deck section, to the sub-section, with the arc [without a hole].  A plug weld, is welding through a hole, to the sub-section.  Which is specified, and how thick is the deck section.  This is an instance that the XX spec. is to your benefit.  In 35 years I have never met an engineer that could describe the E_ _XX [flux] characteristics of what they have specified, they are only concerned with mating material strength.  In either case, I agree with all the recommendations for E7010, E7018 will only drown the arc.   OPUS

Reply:6022 with your stinger taped to a broom stick is the only way to fly for puddle welding decking.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
