Just a question for those that own there own welding business, what do you charge as your hourly shop rate? just wondering ThanksRyan_______________________OF COURSE I DON'T LOOK BUSY... I DID IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME
Reply:I don't believe that anyone will be able to answer your question as there are many variables when pricing a job.  If I'm doing a short production type run, I will charge one hourly rate.  On the other hand, if I am working on a Tool or Die, I will charge a different rate.Rates are established based on currnet overhead, which will vary considerably from region to region, due to differences in taxes, and salary levels. What I would be charging in the Chicago area for a job, a similar job may be quoted much differently in yours.
Reply:ok sorry i should have been more specific im looking for what people are charging as a hourly rate for fabrication/welding._______________________OF COURSE I DON'T LOOK BUSY... I DID IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

Reply:I'd think that from $50-80 an hr. is the average going rate, depending on what you are tangling with. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:my shop rate (i use the term "shop" very loosely, its actually my garage) was $10/hr til ZTFab tore me a new one.  Now I'm asking a lot more.
Reply:I get $35 working out of my garage and sometimes that seems like too much to me.  For that reason, I cut lot's of "good guy" deals and bid jobs.  Mostly the small ones.  I just can't make myself charge 3 times what something can be replaced for.  I get lot's of small jobs I don't think I'd ever see if I charged more.  Any money is good money if you're hungry....   You can hate me if ya want.My name's not Jim....

Reply:Keep in mind that it is hard to increase the hourly rate for a customer so set a rate that seems reasonable to yourself and your customer.   You'll probably be charging the same rate for a long time.Electronics Engineer (embedded controls)Miller 200DX w/ Coolmate 3Thermal Dynamics 82 plasma cutterGrizzly G0678 8x30 millPM1440BV 14x40 latheHF 6x12 surface grinder
Reply:Also its more fun sitting at home going broke than it is busting your azz.    And they're both just as easy.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:i charge $50 per hour for travel to the job and $85 per hour when i get there. if i know of a cheaper way around the problem or if the job is just not gonna be worth fixing i always tell the customer straight up and let them decide. the going rate for welders in my area is $100, (and i know one bloke who charges100 plus consumables) but i am still trying to get a foot in the door.bear in mind in australia i have to pay 30% company tax on any profits, plus income tax on any wage i pay myself from those profits.
Reply:Well one of my instructors charges 79 and thats in a town thats saturated with welders but its a get it if you can market so he has had to go from just doing spiral single to multi story stair cases to anything.Right now in India there's a guy named Frank Mijandohi laughing at that $35 an hour rate.  You have to weigh a lower labor charge and allot of small work versus a higher labor charge and less small work to see which is better for you in the long run to put food on the table and keep the lights on and to replace your box when it gives up the ghost.  I may be new to the welding field but I have worked in the auto field and in the dbs field and low charges hurt the charger all the time and piss off others in the same field which tends to result in problems and rumors for the low baller.
Reply:thanks for the replies I'm just trying to get my foot in the door in my area and was curious what people were charging. I plan on doing decorative  stuff and little jobs that won't have me worrying about liability Last edited by trouble007; 09-05-2010 at 02:12 PM._______________________OF COURSE I DON'T LOOK BUSY...
