Ive really never welded on anything that isnt mild steel or galvanized steel. So when Im looking at parts for handrail and such and it says "cast iron", can I weld that with stick?
Reply:They do make special nickel rods for welding cast iron. True cast iron can be tricky, do a search (if posible with the site being the way it is right now) on some of the posts by Castweld. He welds cast all the time with various methods. Many times parts are not true "cast iron" but cast steel. As such they will weld with any normal steel rod, 7018,7014, 6010/11, 6013 etc. Sometimes the supplier will give suggestions as to what to weld the material with..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Yes, cast iron can be welded with stick. I've had very good results using Ni. 200 with a preheat of approx. 600 deg. F. Once at preheat temp need to start welding immediatly and do not allow to cool in atmosphere. Keep the part hot and wrap with  KOA WOOL or other suitable material to allow the part to cool very slow. It is sometimes put in very hot sand to cool.
