I had to weld some handles on the hatches for the port holes today.  Had 50 handles to weld on.  Decided that 7018 would be easier than dual-shield on this project so here's the result.I had to strip the paint, lay them out, tack, make them sit square to the cover and weld em' up.1/8" Fleetweld 7018 H4R 120amps

Reply:Ya, I just hope the boss likes them seeing as they are publically visible welds for entire crew of the ship.  I figured i'd switch it up a bit, i'm always posting my dual-shield welds.Last edited by WelderBoy; 10-08-2007 at 07:31 PM.

Reply:WelderBoy, I've gathered that you work in a shipyard.  Do you work on military, civilian, or both.  I spent time in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, fun stuff except for the parking.  By the way, awesome pics and welds.Last edited by HT55; 10-09-2007 at 08:28 PM.

Reply:Nice looking welds there, smooth and even and uniform.   Just a little spatter. You have to get better pictures though.     It looks like the focus point was a wee bit beyond the welds and the handles (they are slightly soft/blurry in focus and the background looks sharper than the 'subject' area).  If the pic was close, try the macro/micro setting to get closer focusing (look for the little flower icon on many digital camera for the close-focus/micro/macro setting).  Or on many recent cameras, put the focus 'target' on the desired subject (the welds in this case), depress the shutter halfway to get the exposure and focus 'set' and then recompose the picture without releasing the half-press on the shutter.  Press the shutter fully to take the pic when you have the framing/compostion the way you want.
Reply:MoonRise, my digital camera that I bring to work/fishing doesn't have all those macro features. The one I have at home is a Digital SLR and it has all those features, but I wouldn't ever take it to work, it costs too much $$.
Reply:I spent this entire last spring semester running 7018 beads for practice to test. At the start of the semester, we got this assignment to replicate a vee groove with hand cut pieces of an I-beam. I only focused on vertical beads with 7018, that's it. The result...3 pieces of 10-12 pound solid steel, all weld bead, with the exception of the original I-beam pieces I highlighted in paint marker.  City of L.A. Reply:tanglediver, two things.  Do you have anything for a size comparison of those pieces?  They look small, but if they are 10-12lbs they must be of pretty good size. Also, your name is tangleDIVER.  Are you a diver?  And if so are you a diver/welder?
Reply:No Under Water Welding for me thanks!  It's just a board name, like a C.B. handle. Though I have tried scuba, I don't anymore. The joke was, what do you do when fishing and you tangle up in the rocks or weeds? Send out a diver! That's my favorite lure, you best get it back! Them blocks are about 6" long and about 4" wide and 4" deep. I put them on a scale and the lightest was 10 pounds and the heaviest was 12.City of L.A.
