Does anyone have any ideas about where I can getbare (in other words, NOT copper-coated) rg60 gaswelding rod ?   Both of the welding stores in my area onlyhave the copper-coated kind.   I'm sure it's probably availableon some internet site, but i haven't found it yet.I've got 10 lbs. of the copper-coated stuff, and my puddle lookslike a 4th of July sparkler when i'm going along.....(i guess, from the copper on the rod burning away).   I think I read somewherethat if you use bare rod, you'll get much higher quality welds.THANKS GUY'S !I'll be the LAST one to let you down !
Reply:Marko, it ain't the copper!Sounds like you have too much oxygen on the flame and the oxygen is combining with the molten steel in the pool and making sparklers. It may be time to move up to a bigger tip so you can soften the flame.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
Reply:I believe Richard Finch said that in his book. I've been curious about that. Copper coated mig wire welds OK. I don't do much O/A welding so I can't Really Comment. I bought a "Maintenance Repair kit" of TIG fillers from Gainger a while ago. The steel fillers were copper coated.
Reply:Thank's Franz....I'll give it a try I'll be the LAST one to let you down !
Reply:You're right Jim, now that I think of it...it WAS in Finchs' book !I'll be the LAST one to let you down !

Reply:Thanks Tim.....Yes, I very much pay attention to the adjustment.Too much gas will add carbon to the puddle, making it brittle....Too much Ox. will "burn" the puddle, (could cause porosity).A neutral flame is exactly what I use.I'll be the LAST one to let you down !
Reply:Franz....Question:  When you say "soften the flame", you don't mean going to a carburizing flame, (excess acet.) do you ?I'll be the LAST one to let you down !
Reply:Good gawd almighty, you younguns just want to get way too damn technical with all these regulator settings wire speeds and such.A flame is like a nipple on a cold tit.  Too much oxygen is gonna give you a hard flame just like a nipple hangin out in a cold breeze.  It will act just like a cutting torch with just a touch on the cut lever. If the flame is hard, with too much oxygen, it will burn the molten metal in the pool to consume the excess oxygen, and you'll have sparklers.A neutral flame has an inner cone that is between hard and a nipple that is just about to get hard.  It will heat just a little slower, but works well for welding steel and adding filler.A soft flame is just flat out lazy, great for brazing, but too cold for adding steel filler.Put the torch on the steel, and melt a pool, and if you're pushing the pool with the flame, the flame is too damn hard, back off a little on the oxygen, and the flame should flow over the surface. If you're pushing the tip too hard, you can't soften a flame.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-

Reply:Why dont u try tiewire for rebar it works well and it not coated!!!!!!
Reply:Think i understand now, ol' man.....been using girlfriend toexperiment with the nipple theory I'll be the LAST one to let you down !

Reply:Just ordered a #2 & #3 nozzle from welding supply.comShould be here in a few days.  That should "soften" thenipp........I mean FLAME I'll be the LAST one to let you down !
Reply:I know some of you are saying to yourself:  "what the hell does he need that big of a tip for, if the job is that big, arc weld it" !I want to LEARN !  When i'm as old as Franz and there is nosuch thing as gas welding....I can look at the "youngin's" andsay: "WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE, WE USED TO HAVE TO DO THATWITH GAS" ! I'll be the LAST one to let you down !

Reply:I have a #12 tip on the truck for gas welding. To use that tip this time of year usually requires the manifolding of two 300 cu ft tanks.Franz I always used the 3/16 rod for making grilles to cook lunch on,never thought of using it for hinges.Learn something new everyday
Reply:Well....got my #2 and #3 tip's the other day."SO FAR, SO GOOD" !   I'm getting much less sparklers  One thing I noticed...(or maybe i'm doing something wrong)....with a #0 or a #1 tip...a nice, soft neutral flame gives youbarely a whisper of sound...with the bigger tips....adjusted fora "nice, soft flame"....(Acey. until the flame almost stops smoking, then Ox. until you come down to a neutral flame)....I'm gettinga little more "hissing" sound.   Maybe bigger tips just make more noise.  I'll be the LAST one to let you down !
Reply:Marko, are you setting acet only till it stops smoking, and then turning on the oxygen?Appreciation Gains You Recognition-

Reply:"Rule-of-thumb"......(and I have Victor equiptment).......5 lbs. on both the ox. and acet.....(good for tips up to #3).Light torch and open acetylene until the flame just almost quit's smoking...then, open Ox. to bring it to a neutral flame.(That's what I've been told)  I'll be the LAST one to let you down !
Reply:OK, after you do that, keep adding a little acet, and oxygen in turn till you get a larger flame.  I generally light the acet, and close down the valve till the flame is just at the tip, then add Oxygen/acet/oxygen till I get the flame I want.Appreciation Gains You Recognition-
