Inverter?

I was just about set to buy a Miller Syncrowave 180SD when someone mentioned that I should also consider an inverter power source instead.  What do these inverters do for me and why should I buy one?Mike
Reply:The main benefit is the weight/size of the units. I am considering a Maxstar as my portable unit. The 200+LBS my Lincoln weighs makes it difficult to take with me. The inverter units have been around for a while and have continued to get lighter. The Maxstar 150 STL weighs in at 13.7 pounds. No A/C for this unit but if I want to weld aluminum, I'll bring it home to my Lincoln. Anybody have a Maxstar unit and care to comment on quality?
Reply:I have the Maxstar 200 STR...runs off of 110 thru 440V range(single and three phase).  It is a very capable machine but you don't get it for cheap......I paid $1300but for portability with all the input power options without having to remove the cover to relink...it's first rate.I need some more paydays to get the TIG going.  The thing is more capable that what I need right now, but I hate to buy stuff twice, so I sprung for a TIG enabled box.A true democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for lunch.
