last winter we lost electric for three days. it was great fun using the rosebud to make coffee and carry wood in five times a day..so i promised the wife  time to get a generator.lot of work..clear out some weeds, level an area, found some nice flat  stones to set it on. made a base from some channel and beams that were in the scrap pile..couldnt drive right up to it so i used some pipe (from the scrap pile) to make a ramp and slide it home.  i am gonna burn some rod with it regularly to make sure it is ready to go when the power fails. Reply:Great idea. If you are going to leave it outside there I hope you cover it up. I was going to buy myself a new welder but instead I think I'll buy my wife a generator.  great thinking StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!

Reply:My wife would see right through that one! All my tools seem to cost twice as much as everyone elses.  I pay the price of the tool plus an equal amount for something for my wife.

Reply:i changed the oil , oil filter , air filter ,replaced the corroded  battery cable connections, and discovered that only one of the four feet on the onan 16 was bolted down. spoke to a good support  guy at lincoln  who dug out some drawings and said they did not bolt down the two inboard feet, just the rear ones, so i threw in a 3/8 bolt  washers and lockwasher. cranked right up and started . hooray! shut  it down, took off the covers , started to wipe stuff down. shes old but runs good.question from a newb to engine drives: there is an auto idle position and a high idle. in auto it will idle and run up and down when you strike / break  the arc , and as the generator demands.  whats the high idle for? Reply:High idle would be used if you were using the machine to supply electricity to your home. You might also look into getting the owners manual for this machine. There is a section in there describing what the Ranger 8 will safely supply power to (not sensitive electronic equipment). I got a similar machine this year and it has been great, but do keep it covered up well. Mine was stored in a heated shop it's whole life but still had some corrosion on the electrical connections that had to be dealt with.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8
Reply:i am thinking of some type of doghouse , maybe 1 x 1/8 angle frame with  3/8 plywood, well sealed, that i could slide on and off..right now its a tarp and bungee cord.i read the manual on the lincoln site, i dont think it said what high idle is for.  i thought for power generation  you left it in auto..
Reply:I like the doghouse idea.  Make it authentic with "fido" over a fake door and a really heavy chain out front. My name's not Jim....

Reply:I have a Ranger 8 and I use the high idle setting when I'm using my LN25 to wire weld this helps the starts to burn in.Martin MC Weld TechAWS-CWIAWS-CWEwww.linkedin.com/pub/martin-cramer/20/b36/940/
Reply:i re-read the manual and it says for stick/power generation,  and ln25 use auto, for tig and ln7 use high. auto seems to be a 2 speed  setting, low  idle and high speed(3600), and high idle is i believe 2200rpm, which i think would cause frequency problems if generating..
Reply:Originally Posted by noriteNever used a Ranger 8 personally, but high idle would be needed for the ac generator portion of the machine to maintain 60 Hz (frequency) which depends on the speed of the engine.  A 4 pole ac generator would need to run at 1800 rpm, a 6 pole would run at 1200 rpm IIRC.
Reply:Ok, heres the scoop on using a generator for emergency power at home.  Last winter I rigged up emergency power for my home in case the electric goes off like it has over the last several winters.  After reading much on the web I decided to do it right.First I called my electric companies engineer, delt with him while building my home, and ask what I needed to do.  He said what I knew he would.  I then called an approved (by the electric company) electrical inspector and ask him to come out.  He looked over my deal and listened to what I wanted to do and gave me the ok to do as he said.  I ordered a 200amp manual disconnect transfer switch from northern tools dot com for pretty cheap and installed it, wired it up as he had instructed, then bought my generator.  When i was all finished I called the inspector again and he came out, inspected and tested my new setup, then faxed my approval to my electric company.  Now I'm certified to use backup power at my home.  With my manual transfer switch there is no way to back-feed the power lines (the grid) and maybe kill a worker.Using the breaker box's main breaker is not safe.  Thats because the distance between the contacts is only a very small amount and they could short over.  Besides - - most important here - -- if a lineman is hurt and someone goes around looking for the generator that did it and finds you using an unapproved setup - you can not prove you didn't do it.  lolThere is only one way to hook up my generator to my home and that is with a female plug.  That cord has 1 male and 1 female plug.  There is no cord on my premises that has 2 male plugs on it, so there is no way for me to hook my generator up without going through my transfer switch.Just a thoughgood luck guysLast edited by slowhand; 10-20-2010 at 09:24 PM.

Reply:[QUOTE=7A749;430770]One thing you are gonna want to do, as was mentioned, build an enclosure for it. so this enclosure needs to have a front and aft louver so the machine can pull air through, yes?
