Thanks to the guys for steering me away from Clarke machines. I just picked up my new Miller 175 and can't wait to use it. My question is about welding cast iron and cast iron to steel. I make alot of stuff with found cast iron and I need to know how to proceed with the MIG welder. The welding shop that I bought the Miller from told me that I can use stainless steel wire and pure argon gas as the special wire for cast iron only comes in the lagre spools and that it is at least $10.00 per pound. You guys are the experts so I wanted to find out what you think. Thanks,Ryguy
Reply:I would probably bite the bullet and buy a 10# spool of wire if I needed it. The other thing I might do is find an AC stick machine and get some electrodes for that and leave my feeder setup for steel. Throw a rod in the buzz box when I needed to work with cast. It would also save buying another gas bottle and avoid the hassle of changing over wire types.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:Some kinds of cast iron can be welded with stainless steel wire, but you should use the 309 alloy. Argon will work, but 2% CO2 would help stabalize your arc some. |
