I have never welded cast iron before.  Reading here everyday I knew that ya'll could help me out.  I have O/A and TIG to use.  This part goes on a meat grinder (3 deer to grind up!!!).   The wheel is hand tightened so no pressures to worry about. What filler rod should I get?ThanksjimLast edited by David R; 01-20-2008 at 11:32 AM.Reason: pics
Reply:I am no help for the welding but that shouldn't stop you from using the grinder. Is that off a Hobart? My dads looks the same way except for the broken piece is missing.
Reply:You could just braze it or find a generous friend with some N99 filler..If thats only where you grab it to tighten it down with then I would not worry about it..I don't think its a big deal.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:braze itChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder

Reply:you could use cast iron rod (big money!!!) I would preheat it first then see how the rod run's and then wait for the cracks if they show up  zap ...what's n99 never heard of it

Reply:NIcast 99 rods $7 for 4 rods at Ace.  Clean it up good.  Use fork type welding clamps to position the broken part. Place in oven or gas grill get it as hot as possible most likely they'll top out at 500-600F. Make areas to be welded hotter, glowing dull red if you can with propane or mapp gas torch (be careful to not tilt the torch in a way to make it run rich esp. with MAPP gas, you'll get nasty greasy soot all over your clean iron).  Weld the thing back on at 75 amps AC.  Put torch back on it weaving over the welded areas pulling away VERY slowly till it stops glowing tap off slag, peen the welded areas and leave in oven or grill and slowly turn down heat 50F increments every 30 minutes. Presto.  Or, some good epoxy would probably work fine for your application.Anything can be fabricated on-site. Truth is fabricated online.
Reply:Braze it with brass brazing rod. The flux coated will be fine. I would use .062".
