Hey all, I haven't been on in awhile but since the last time I have aquired a new job which I will start in a few days.  I'm pretty sure from the looks of the shop I will be able to listen to a radio while I work which would awesome! My big question is can you prep a radio/stereo from being destroyed by all the dust and metal shards? The last time I had a radio in a shop it lasted all of 2 weeks before the speakers were shot and every crevase of the unit was filled with steel shards. I dunno if you guys have a suggestions. I know there are shop radios are there that would probably be what I want but I need a cd player and AUX plug for a ipod would be even better. Any of you guys/gals use anything you are happy with?FLASH ME.... I'm a welder
Reply:Build a cabinet with a filter and fan blowing into it to maintain a positive pressure???  You could put speakers in a plastic bag perhaps but you may get some distortion from the plastic vibrating. If speaker cone and dust cover intact and a non ported box you MIGHT be safe. would put it as far out of the path of metal chips., grinding dust etc as possible, as far as CD drive etc a box with positive pressure is the only way I can think of to keep the dust out.  just be sure the fan never gets shut off and the filter stays clean!-- fredLincoln 180C MIG

Reply:Buy cheap radios, and keep them as far away from the work as possible. The speakers are magnetic, and the whole radio is positively charged with static. You can't get by the fact that it will eventually collect some snot. Best bet, keep the radio up high, off the floor. If you can keep the radio near a shop fan, it will help to keep the air moving, less settling right onto the radio.Old radios are just tougher than the new ones........And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:Just my view...Why not use an inexpensive mp3 player with ear buds? The small one are very light weight and can easily clip to the inside of a shirt/jacket pocket.$20 - $40 gets you a good quality brand like say a tiny SanDisk at 4 GB with FM radio and a built-in microphone (in case you want to record the boss yelling at you).  The Coby's sell for even cheaper. Forget CDs - that's gone the way of the dinosaurs! The CD players are too large, way too fragile, spinning mechanics and you have to burn and handle disks... give me a break! The MP3 player/radio/recorder is cheaper, no mechanical/optical/magnetic moving parts - just the magnets in the ear buds.  I have no idea what build-up you may/may not get on the ear buds.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:He has an iPod, it says he needs an AUX for an iPod in OP, but couldn't agree more, I find CDs annoying now really, ha!
Reply:you can plug the mp3 into the dewalt radio ...
Reply:I am on 5 years with my DeWalt jobsite radio, it has been letft out in the rain, snow, etc..... ground on, melted, and it still cranks out the tunes and charges the batteries.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Ditto on the DeWalt jobsite radio, also has an input jack for MP3, XM, etc.  I have all DeWalt cordless tools but all the major cordless brands now make a radio with built in battery charger, Milwaukee, Makita, etc.  Plus the radio will run off the tool battery if you need to take it away from the shop.Forget anything with moving parts, ie tape or CD player.  Keep it out of the path of hot sparks and it should be fine.
Reply:Another vote for the dewalt, heres mine!  My wife got me mine for christmas a few years ago. Much like TOZZI, it has been in the cold, rain, snow, sliding around in the truck, dropped, showered with sparks and even got stolen! Has worked for years and it still charges the batteries and cranks music. Attached ImagesYou have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else. Albert Einstein
Reply:I have been using a Bose Sound DockII with a 160 Gig Ipod classic for a couple of years now with no problems.  It has been all over the world--literally--and been rained on, snowed on, in EXTREME humidity, kicked, stepped on, knocked over, bounced aroound the truck, you name it, and still works fine.  The only downside might be the 400 dollar price tag for the Bose and 250 for the 160gig IPOD.  And the sound quality and volume is PHENOMENAL!6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:Thanks for the reply guys, afer I made the post I did price out the DeWalt. I am, however, intrested in the milwaukee (cheaper) anyone have experince with them?FLASH ME.... I'm a welder
Reply:i still say build a plasma speaker, nothing like the smell of ozone to go with your tunes!
Reply:Most shop stereo speakers that I've seen die was due to someone was trying to turn it up loud enough to be heard over grinders, hammers and other shop tools and blew the speakers.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:Please don't buy Bose, they are expensive for the name, not build quality/component quality/sound quality. A speaker that can go loud does not mean it is a good speaker. Cruise Craigslist for old speakers and an amp and use them, sealed speakers would work best because they wouldn't allow anything to get near the magnets through a port.2 DJ speakers and an amp should be reliable for a permanent installation (garage/shop), might I suggest: two of the [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Pro-PADH879-Two-Way-Speaker-Cabinet/dp/B0007L8BB2/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1291145713&sr=1-2"]Pyle DJ monitors[/ame] and a cheap stereo receiver or amp such as: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PAMP1000-Channel-Stereo-Amplifier/dp/B002UL0XH2/ref=sr_1_33?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1291145923&sr=1-33"]Pyle 160w amp[/ame] (This is a clone of the audiosource 100W amp that I have) or a [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Sherwood-RX-4105-2-Channel-100-Watt-Receiver/dp/tech-data/B0002EPWC0/ref=de_a_smtd"]Sherwood receiver[/ame] which would also have more inputs and a tuner. Place the receiver in a cabinet with doors and enough internal volume for the heat to go somewhere, mount the speakers high up on the walls or ceiling.

Reply:Hmmm....maybe I'm old school. If it were me, I would not start out in a new job listening to the radio. For the first few months, I would just concentrate on doing the job and making the boss happy. The name of the game for a new job is to make the boss think that he cannot do without you. First impressions are most important. After a year or so, then I would think about a radio. I find that when welding, I like to put all my attention on the project at hand. But that is just me.Oh man, I sound like the old guys who I used to work with and are now either retired or dead. Funny how the more things change the more they stay the same.

Reply:My friend taped some paper towel over the stereos vent grills as a dust filter. Speaker however, they just look like Jimmy Walker in a cage after a while.
