I trash a LOT of tungsten when I am tigging.  I used to drop the contaminated ones on the bench and kept the sharp ones in a tube.  I made these boxes for something to do.    The contaminated ones now go in the tray to be resharpened instead of all over the bench.1/8" plate,Pulsed Spray Mig, .045 wire AG8, 100 ipm.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:I dip them TOO often.  I like to keep a short arc so....The gold I just bought.  Today I cut em in half and sharpened them.  They seem to grind easier than the thorated.  Haven't used any yet.   Oh yeah and I won't go sterile DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:That looks like a handy little tray.Brilliant!
Reply:That's a lot of tungstens on the bench!  I usually only have one - the one I'm using, and it's only sharpened on one end.  I find I am less likely to foul the tungsten if I know I gotta get up and sharpen it each time I do foul it.  I probably average about 1 sharpen per half hour, but have also been know to put it back in the torch and immediately foul it again!

Reply:I have done some piecework.  Having a pile just saves time.  The last job I tigged was 23 pieces at about an hour and some each.  Sharpen the pile at the end of the day....If  I don't run out 1 every 1/2 hour is 10 or 20 a day.....DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Why do you cut them in half, you are wasting at least 30% of each Tungsten. Why not just wait until they have been ground down through use. By the looks of it you won't have to wait too long

Reply:If you grind them at both ends you get twice as many anyway. I spend all day, welding custom built Ventilation/Extraction Canopies for commercial kitchens out of 0.8mm 304 Stainless Steel. So I know all about dipping ends

Reply:Why dont you sharpen both ends? Theres got to be a reason, only one I can think of is if they get too contaminated the bad end doesnt fit into the sleeve :OHTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.

I've got about 20 hours of practice in now on 24g mild steel and I'm comfy there - but stainless is still new to me.Thanks

Reply:I have to grind quite a few tungsten when I do piecework as well.  Most of the machinests call out for some small tight welding that require you to get really close to the work.  And with adding speed = lots of grinding.  But I could never grind more than 2 or 3 at a time because that gives me chance to stretch my legs. Reply:I did not do it I tell you.
Reply:Sharpening the tungsten at both ends is a good idea, but  if you are not careful you can bite yourself in the a$$. If you start welding with a double ended tungsten and you  end up with a big glob on the end of it, its finished, do not try to take the cap off the torch and insert it through the back, you will end up in trouble if you goober up both ends while inserted. My rule is to only turn the tungsten around when the tip is only mildly contaminated.
