I got into TIG and realize I need a sharpener.  I don't need any commercial grade, but I refuse to buy the HF garbage (if they even make one).

Reply:Grinder is a possibility, but a dedicated sharpener would be better for me and my garage.  The grinder would get used for other stuff, etc...
Reply:dedicated means it dont get used for other stuff. and you can make a holder for it.... Attached Images
Reply:I was thinking more of something like this:http://www.htpweld.com/products/tig_.../sharpener.htmThere are others that go for $750-$1000. I'm looking more in the $200-$300 range.ThanksLast edited by bluduk15; 07-07-2010 at 08:26 PM.

Reply:Hey Duane, I've got one of those and it works pretty darn good.
Reply:That's actually a pretty good setup Duane, but I've been burned by HF electric tools twice--learned that lessson.I guess I should've been more specific. I don't want a typical wheel grinder but a purpose built tungsten grinder--like the HTP version linked above.Last edited by bluduk15; 07-07-2010 at 08:51 PM.
Reply:I understand and I knew the type grinder you were talking about but just threw it out there for consideration.I agree Bob.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:That little grinder would be hard to pass up at 28.00 + tax (after a 20% off coupon)!Beats the heck out of spending 200-300.00 dollars.Fortunately, I've had pretty good success with the HF electric tools (grinders, heavy duty drill, etc.).

Reply:Why do you want an actual tungsten sharpener?  Your a fool if you think you need one, and a bigger fool if you think its going to improve your weld quality or save you time.Get a bench grinder with a coarse and fine stone and thats all you will ever need.  And if it gets used for other stuff, big deal.  Our grinder gets used on all kinds of stuff it shouldnt be and its never effected the tungsten.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:I have always used what ever grinder was around, but maybe this would work ?                                     http://www.amazon.com/PointMaker-Ele...=pd_rhf_shvl_4

Reply:Hey Bluduk, dont take offence from my post I was only joking around. I own $300.00 G-Loomis fishing rods and I don't know how much I have spent on golf clubs(and I still can't break 100) and then theres  tools and hunting. Anyway you probably raised some eyebrows with the price of that sharpener but who's to say. Im sure we all spend our money on things that are important to us that others can't see. I think there was a saying something like" Don't be afraid to buy the best, you won't be disapointed.

Reply:uh, ok.......... back to the regular broadcast........Hand-held belt sander. Get one with a fairly flat back( my Ryobi is rectangular like a brick), make a fixture to hold it on it's back, and off you go. $50 maybe. That leaves $150-$250 for beer. I'll take my half in cash. Don't want that watered down stuff you have in the StatesCould even mount a little angle guide to you fixture to give you repeatable angle for the point.Bert200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:truth is you don't actually NEED a tungsten grinder..  but I would say at least a dedicated grinder or a dedicated wheel would serve you well.  For a home hobby shop or even a small shop you may not notice any great difference in your welds but when you get into more precision processes and definitely in any kind of automated process you'll need to have either a tungsten grinder, or a pre-ground tungsten electrode....  and thanks for the shout out DesertRider. Glad you still like the Sharpie. It is one of our most popular products...-----------------------Carmen Electrodewww.CarmenElectrode.comand the boss blogs at  www.JoeWelder.comall powered by  www.Arc-Zone.com

Reply:Originally Posted by bluduk15I looked at bench grinders this weekend.  For those who use them, do you have a grinder that turns clockwise?  It seems like it would be easier to grind with the point going away from you instead of pointing down (assuming you were grinding longitudinally).
Reply:Originally Posted by sn0border88 Belt sanders, bench grinders and the like are all designed so the sparks shoot down.  Your not going to find one that turns away from the rest and shoots the sparks and grit in your face.

Reply:A bench grinder with a fine wheel is all you need. That's what alot of people use.

Reply:Originally Posted by bluduk15Thanks Duane. Any problems with the wheel turning toward you?  Would it be easier if it turned the other way?
Reply:Originally Posted by makoman1860Well the idea is to grind away from the tip to avoid contamination at the tip.
Reply:clockwise is wrong..first off if yer grindin anything it pushes the werk down to the rest ..if it went clockwise it would keep lifting it upsecond if yer doin tungsten as the wheel comes towards you the dirt goes away from the tip makin it cleaner
Reply:Here's what I use: The Harbor Freight 1x30" Belt Sander,  I only use it to sharpen my tungsten, and it kicks butt at doing it too!  Really, you can't beat it for around $30.  I put my tungsten in my drill and aim the drill vertically downward at whatever angle I want on the tip of my tungsten.  Pull the trigger on the drill to rotate the tungsten, and then push the rotating tungsten in the belt sander.  In a few seconds, I have a perfectly sharpened tungsten.Last edited by BurningMetal; 12-14-2010 at 10:19 PM.
