Trebuchet for the kids

I just got done welding this up for my kids. It is a trebuchet, a medieval siege engine used to smash castle walls back in the day. We will use it to fling baseballs - golf balls - and other stuff. I also built it to use in my science class. It has lots of variables for the kids to adjust (arm length - counter weight hanging or fixed - mass of counter weight - rolling or fixed wheels). It was a lot of fun to build. Attached Images
Reply:That's wicked, only thing I never understood about trebuchets was how they released the ammo at the right time. Nice work.

Reply:Thanks"it knows" when to release the projectile. Really it just slides off the "hook" when it gets to top dead center. We have not tried a baseball yet. We lost the golf ball in the neighbors yard due to snow cover but found it in short order.

Reply:Great one, we also did one back in highschool. Used a 40 kg conterweight and it rocked. I also had a miniature version with a 1 lb CW. Reply:Are the tires on the Buick D.O.T. approved??Looks just like tires that say "Not For Highway Use" on them.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Odd. The word "trebuchet" already made me think of Buick before I even clicked on the thread. It was either a video on the web or a Dave Barry book, but I have heard a connection somewhere.
