Did more practice today...   had some problems at first, didnt check my polarity, then I was too cold, then I couldnt get the arc blow to stop so I just switched to AC.Anyway. Horizontal fillets using a 1/8" 7018 on 3/8" plate on A/C powerMy biggest conern, why am I getting porosity at the ends of the welds? the pictures dont show it that great but the last 1/2" of the welds are full of porosity. any other areas I need to improve? machine was a T/A 300 at about 130-140 amps, AC power, it has all sorts of adjustable waves and what not I have no idea how to work so I hope that was all set right. Reply:Try a pause at the end of the weld to fill the crater.7018 runs better on DC + electrode at those amps.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:also if your running it out of rod like close to the end so its long arcing that may be a problem.6G zirconium 702 GTAW 2" xxheavy6G P.E.D. carbon steel GTAW 2" xxheavy3G titanium Gr. 2 - Gr. 7 GTAW up to 3/4" 3G 316L stainless GTAW up to 1" 3G carbon steel GTAW up to 1" 3G Hastalloy GTAW up to 3/4"1G tantalum GTAW up to .060"
Reply:I was having issues with arc blow today, tried switching the ground around and a few different things but didnt help thats why I just switched to AC and stopped running DC+.  I guess I'll try tomorrow on DC+ again and see what I can do to stop the arc blow. but the 7018's i was running were them h8 ones that are suppose to work well on AC if that matters? also I generally make sure I have a long enough rod in to comfortably complete the weld without having it too short at the end.  If this was a test I would have failed miserably... Reply:Your welds look good, try another brand of electrodes.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:thanks, I guess I'll try tomorrow with new rods too...  I'm only allowed 3/8" of porosity in any given inch of weld and a total of 3/4" over the entire project (both sides)so even though my weld may look good otherwise... it came out to about double the max allowed porosityI like to party!
Reply:as you are dragging it, when you get towards the end, try and start to pull the rod in towards you as you would start to push it. it doesn't have to be an extreme angle change, just a little to keep that arc under control
Reply:Flame cut, did you grind before you welded?  Dross from the cut can create porosity.
Reply:My take is, you need to get rid of that mill scale. Any crap in the weld zone with 7018 and you will see trouble come of it. It ain't like 6011. Also, make sure that you are using fresh rods, or rods from an oven if you want the best results.City of L.A. Reply:Next time , add run off pads at each end of the plates . That way , any porosity should be out on the runoff pads . That's the way tests  are done. Prep , (grind clean ) the plates , and like already mentioned , rebake your rod in oven. even 350 degrees for an hour and a half CAN work wonders . If you get arc blow, try turning the plate around end for end . Or just weld the opposite direction .[SIZE="5"Yardbird"

Reply:Wandering puddle/rod not burning straight on the end...usually caused by damp(bad) rod or magnetic metal.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT

Reply:thanks yall, no pics sorry... but I used some fresh rods + clean plate and no porosity! Also got a few tips from someone watching me weld. and all just a matter of slowing down and changing the shape of my puddle made all the difference in the world.  bad news is, I flashed the living (insert curse word here) out of myself today and I cant see a dang thing...Give you guys pics tomorrow...Seriously, between this site... and just having friends that weld, I've learned more and faster than I did at 6 months at my school. Having people like yall just  there to answer questions (which dont happen at school) or having a friend watch your welds can make you better in a matter of minutes.... practice practice practice. but if you dont have someone helping to fix your mistakes your just practicing to make more. thanks guys!I like to party!
