Science Toy (First Class lever)Here are a few photos of a first class lever I made for class. I can “telescope” the effort arm 3 meters to increase the mechanical advantage. Thus a small eighth grader can pick up a short fat science teacher (me at 190lbs) with one finger. Attached Images
Reply:Note I'm taking the picture so no I'm not the women picking up the kid.
Reply:Not exactly a large load....  Me!

Reply:No not a heavy load but that was for a picture. I have a bunch of kids who like to eat and do not skip meals. One finger or thumb is all one needs to lift "Johnny Box of Donuts"Last edited by Reebs; 02-13-2008 at 08:42 PM.

Reply:At 50 years old now, you wouldn't want me in that seat either,,,,lol,,,,however as I remember the 8th grade and our shop teacher I recall a very good time as the teacher would let us take on anything we did not understand, such as levers,,,,,,good job is what I see,,,,please continue
Reply:It's great for me to see teachers using practical visuals to show the students what they are teaching.  When I was in high school, I had a math teacher (Geometry, Pre-Cal and Calculus) who was the best teacher I ever had.  He's passed away now, and the world is worse for it, but he could always relate how the idea he was teaching could be used.  He had been a contractor in a previous life and had a home building business, and was also a farmer, so he could explain how geometry helped framers etc.  Some didn't care for his classes, but for me, and most of my classmates, he made it all come together and make sense.  I graduated in 2001 and Mr. Maedgen passed suddenly about a month ago, I believe he was still teaching.  Reebs, I think it's GREAT that you can use your talents outside the classroom to relate those classroom lessons to your students better!  Keep up the great work, and thankyou for bringing back my confidence (at least a little) in the educational system.Contact me for any metal polishing needs you may have, my avatar is a pic of a standard, painted fire axe that I ground, sanded polished and buffed to a mirror finish.
Reply:cool, always helps to see it first hand when trying to explain. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:My hs geometry teacher was ex special forces and at one time a Los Alamos scientist (multiple masters and phd's). We had some very interesting visitors with some unbelievable demonstrations. I was there every morning needing help because I was lost. Twenty years later we were in a Windows class and he walked up and said you are going to appreciate this, help. Seems they didn't have windows when he was using gov't computers. I applaud any teacher who uses practical examples and even goes so far as to build them. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Thanks for the great feedback. "The only way to learn it is to do it and feel it". txfireguy2003 What do you do for a living? (fireman is my guess) A special forces math teacher. Any discipline problems?
Reply:Yup, I'm a fireman...well, 10 days a month I am anyway.  On the other twenty I WAS building BBQ pits for extra money, but now I'm in Paramedic school and have almost no spare time.  I'm kind of a career student.Contact me for any metal polishing needs you may have, my avatar is a pic of a standard, painted fire axe that I ground, sanded polished and buffed to a mirror finish.
Reply:If you graduated in 2001 one you are a puppy. Hey we are all students.Have a good weekend reber
