Does anyone know of any process to get steel to turn green naturally? I like to finish my projects in clear urethane and leave the colors however they end up from welding/forming.I definitely don't want to use paint,powder coat,anodize or transient dyes. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for looking.
Reply:Nope, not without using one of those methods you said you don't want to use.  The only other thing I could think of, and it's expensive, would be to take your project to a chrome shop and have them apply an electroplated copper coating.  The copper will oxidize and form a greenish patina naturally.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:steel will not turn green naturally, that is copper, Iron will turn greenish but i never found pure iron for sale...couple of years ago i made steel furniture and some other stuff for a fancy clothing store, the architect wanted the furniture made of copper but the owner did't like my copper quotation so i made everything from steel and copper coated, the coating alone was about 2x the price of the steel  and that after serious negotiations --------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous
Reply:With steel about the only 'look' you are going to get is from heat---use a rosebud or something and heat it a bit and see what colors you get---do a piece of scrap first.I did a rail job once out of 2inch solid square and did it like that, heated till blue and straw colored, clear coated it...it came out nice.
