Oxygen & mapp gas welding kit

I spotted a Berzomatic Oxygen & Mapp Gas kit at lowes for 50.00. I have a small mapp torch for plumbing jobs but brazing is a problem. Is there a big difference between just mapp & mapp+02? Will this kit be a good starter kit for minor railing and other small fence repairs?
Reply:you are only going to have about 12-15 minutes of o2 per can, there is a great difference with oxy than with mapp alone. You would do much better to get a real torch kit if you plan to work with fencingStangnetShop Full Of Stuff. Joey

Reply:if i am thinking straight, the lincoln kits are by harris, which is a good thing because both victor and harris torch parts are very available. You are going to use roughly 3 tanks of o2 for every tank of acetylene. In all honesty you might do best to call a local distrib. and see if they have a torch package up for sale, i've seen them half price when you get the 2 tanks from themStangnetShop Full Of Stuff. Reply:vipermanz is right about the O2 going fast in those small cylinders used in the bernzomatic kits. 10 minutes if you're lucky. Glad to hear you mention brazing-it's a great joining process provided you clean the metal well, watch the fit up (use jigs orclamps) and get the joint red hot before introducing the fluxed rod to the joint/firecombination. Most people move on to welding, but brazing is more economical if you'reconserving fuel and oxygen. Keep in mind that brazing metals may have a different color than the joined metals.Go for the bigger tanks, 40 cubic feet or more, because welding is addicting. Oxy fuelwelding is my personal favorite. I like the smooth clean look of a properly made gasweld. Don't forget about the versatility of oxyfuel for flame cutting steel. That's another process you'll want to get into soon after you get your equipment.Go for the larger tanks- you won't regret it.Best of luck,Don
Reply:You can braze with Maap and oxy but welding is not practical.  If you intend to weld with a torch you need Oxy-acetylene.
