I have a cast steel gear case I need to weld up. It has a spot worn through it and it leaks gear oil. Its not a structural issue. Could I use my MM 175 to weld it up with the .035 wire, or would a stick welder be better? Which stick welding rod would I use? I do NOT have acess to a tig welder.Any help? Thanks, Doc.Some of the things I do would cause a person to get hurt, expelled, arrested, or possibly deported. To put it another way, don't try this at home.Look at the stars whenever your can. That light travelled a long way to get here, dont let it go to waste on some patch of asphalt.

Reply:Hey why don't you try some JB Weld? They claim to have fixed engine blocks with that stuff.Just a thought. I have used it in the past for crazy stuff and it worked.
Reply:JB weld was already tried. Its in a bad spot, and the JB weld seems to shrink away from the housing. The area of the leak isnt flat. Sort of concave. We have pulled a few of these gear cases out and had them heli-arc welded. I dont think they were preheated as they were still assemebled, seals, gaskets and all. ITs about 4 hours work to pull one.Since this isnt really a crack, and since it isnt iron, I felt that mig welding them would work as all I am trying to do is stop basically a pin hole leak. Thanks, Doc.Some of the things I do would cause a person to get hurt, expelled, arrested, or possibly deported.
