Anybody have an opinion  as to whether the new inverter based Tig machines like Lincoln Invertec V205 and Miller Dynasty 200 will do that much better than machines like the older tecnology like Lincoln and Miller squarewave 180/185 machines?    What about on Aluminum?      I guess what I'm getting at...is it worth it for the extra money for the inverter machines other than they are small and light and take a lot less amperage out of the wall?   Do the inverters produce enough improvement/ease to tig to justify the price?
Reply:I had a 180sd that was less than a year old. My plan was to sell that and get a synch. 250DX machine. I was lurking on the millermotorsports message board and there are many posts about inverter machines such as the dynasty 200. I had the chance to demo one this past Saturday. I did not care about stainless or steel all I cared about was alum. I know the dynasty 200dx will do stainless and steel no prob. So I went to the welding supply place after hours on Sat. and the salesmgr. and I hooked a brand new dyn. 200 up with #17 torch, foot pedal and some pure argon. I also brought with me some scrap cleaned alum. The first weld I did was thin to thin (.090) fillet weld. I had the amps about 110 and the freq. set about 150 I think. Made a nice bead but I said to the salesmgr. Ya so what my 180sd could do that. I wanted to see thick (.500) to thin (.090). I am in the process of making an upper intake box out of .090 and weld it to the throttle body flange which is .500 thick. So I did a mock up of the flange to the .090. I layed the .090 half way onto the .500 edge to simulate welding of the flange to one side of the pleunum box. We turned the heat up to 175 and the freq. up to like 200hz. I was able to pinpoint the arc at the thicker stuff. When it started to puddle the thinner stuff followed suit and it keyholed so nice. I welded the coupon and the salesmgr said "man with a weld like that you can make some money". I did do the same with the 180sd but it was not as nice nice and not as clean and uniform. I must say when you are on a higer freq. that thing sings like a high winding model airplane. I am picking up the dyn. 200DX next week. I am sold.T.J.www.tjsperformance.comgo to my site to see the upper plenum done with the 180sd
Reply:thanks for your input, TJ......very useful info.     Enjoyed looking around your web site, too.  You do some interesting stuff!
