I have some highway sign material and my efforts to TIG this material have been Impossible. Does anyone know what the mat. is? When you strike an arc, it's like a 1/8" dia flake flies off the surface and deposits on the tungsten. Looks like I will be bending my 90s. P.S. I cleaned well with SS brush and cleaned with Acetone.
Reply:i read that some road signs are a titanium-aluminum alloy, what are you trying to make with it?StangnetShop Full Of Stuff. Joey
Reply:My best guess is that the raw aluminum is Anodized. To weld this material, I grind (it's not enough to wire brush) the layer of the "coating" off,  as you grind, grind the edge first, then from the edge toward the center of the sign. It may have an "aluminum" color, but you should be able to detect a difference between the original anodized material, and the "raw" aluminum. Most commercial finished products are anodized, IE: storm doors, store front frames, handles on tools, etc. If it dose not get a powdery coating when left outside, it probably has been anodized.Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
