Well I haven't posted in awhile, but here goes. I had to go get this one up out of the road yesterday. Broke clean thru both sides all the way to the the top flange. We had to unload it, and then raise it up and weld it back enough to get it to the shop. I'll have to cut out the stressed part of the web on both sides and replace it, then plate both sides and the bottom. I'll get started in the morning so progress pics will be on the way soon. Reply:That tore the metal. Is it That rusty or was it that overloaded?Nice to have ya back Hammack. DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:where did the tear start? it tore both frame rails?Last edited by tortis; 02-17-2008 at 05:49 PM.
Reply:Good to be back David, It actually sheared thru from a crack. I'll explain in further detail tomorrow, but whoever replaced the fifth wheel plate last welded across the bottom of the beam and did not weld a plate across it to tie it in. It basically cracked in the HAZ of the weld on the fifth wheel plate. They just did not catch it, and was coming out and it hit a hole, and just sheared up both sides. The trailer is acutally covered in mud which makes it look rusted. It'll look better tomorrow after my helper gets it cleaned up.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:That isn't a hardened non-weldable frame is it?I'm certainly no expert, but I've seen some warning labels on some rigs I've run.

Reply:It's not hardened. This trailer was made by a fairly local company and they use mild steel. Nothing exotic about it. This failure was caused by a previous repair not a design. Had it been repaired right the first time I would not have it now. I'm sure if you go back and search I posted a few of this same repair before. any, I have to get back to work. Catch you guys later.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Don't ya just hate fixing others messes? I know I do, but it sure pays well. lol.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:I didn't get too much done today as i was gone out on service calls most of the day, and I'm still waiting on my steel order to be delivered. I did get it cut down, and back level. The plate will be here in the morning, and hopefully by tomorrow evening I can be wrapping it up. So far one side was a clean break, just needed to be ground clean and welded back. The otherside was stretched, and I wound up taking out a section of the web. I'll replace the cut out section then plate inside and out. Then weld 1/2"x4" on the bottom flange to tie it together. All welds are with 7018's, and gouged out so they can be welded thru 100%. The camera isn't real good but you can see what is taking place. Reply:Could you just pull the electrical back or are you having to cut and resplice? Hopefully the first part.Miller 250DXTD Cutmaster 100Duct TapeBFH
Reply:The air lines had to be cut and sliced, and the electrical was taken off at the plug and pulled back thankfully. I burned the air lines patching it up to get it out of the road, but that was a necesary sacrafice to save time. So I have to splice them.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Gald to see you back Hammack .Sure looks like a fun job. Also the weather there looks great compared to the crappy winter I am having.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:Well I finally got finished with the trailer. Here are a few more pics. These are of the plate I welded into the web of the beam to replace what I had to cut out.I left a slight gap all the way around the plate, This pic is the back side of the weld to shot the penetration. It was 1/4" plate 3/32" 7018 95 ampsI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Then I had to cut a plate to strengthen the sides. These were placed inside and out. Then the middle cross member was welded back into the middle to tie the sides together. I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Then from the underside a plate was added to give strength. Who ever added the fifthwheel plate did not replace these braces and ultimately led to the failure of the frame. Attached ImagesI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Nice job the repair is clean and slick
