Hi, I'm new here and I please need your advice.I want to buy a welder to install iron fences in my front yard. There is not much work, barely 40 feet or running fence and framing to install an iron gate. To contract someone for this job still will be much much higher than buying me a welder and doing it by myself. The fence is old, solid iron, the rods are 1/2" and some need to be repaired, this is to say, are broken or cut off. The flat bars appear to be 1/8" thick, and the post I will buy will be square 1 1/2" and 1/8" side thick. The store I have "store credit" to use by a few hundreds of dollars is Home Depot (returning lots of stuff leftovers from former projects).I would prefer to buy a 120 volts or an oxy-fuel welder, because these are more practical to be used anywhere inside and outside my house, but I can run a 220v circuit from the panel box to a new 220 receptacle outside my house if necessary. I guess that the welder will rest most of the time because after this project I don't have more heavy work around.Which one of the following welders should fit better for rthis project of mine,Lincoln HD 125 wire feed welderLincoln HD 140 wire feed welderLincoln Port and torch LEWKH776Lincoln HD 180 wire feed welderLincoln Handy MIG welder K2185-1  Lincoln AC225S Welder? Please have in mind that after the fences' project I will continue doing some other sporadic applications at home, like patching metal laminate, specially for my old truck, and who knows, I may try some metal iron art as a hobby.Thank you in advance for your advice.
Reply:The Lincoln 180 would be the best bang for the buck for any future needs but as you stated requires 240v and again, as you mentioned, does propose a wee bit of a problem for mobility..... but if the fence is not that far away still a better option for the future. So 1st choice is the 180 and a 240v extension cord2ndis the 140I don't recommend the Buzzboz only because you mentioned body work on your truck- it can certainly do the fence project and a lot of other stuff but the 180 Wirefeed is just a a better choice for sheet metal, thin wall tubing etc etc.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Thank you Broccoli1.By reading your reply, I guess that the LEWKH776 won't be good for welding in the installation of the fences. If so, is the size of the tanks or the capabilities of the valves the reason why the Lincoln KH776 can't perform the job at satisfaction? Thanks in advance again.

Reply:Broccoli1, I followed your advice. Today I went to Home Depot and acquired the Lincoln Electric 140 HD. My store credit cards were of the amount of 520 dollars (from leftover materials I bought months ago for other projects), the machine did cost 550 including tax, so today I spent 30 dollars from my packet.  I will be practicing for the next weeks between my duty hours, in order to do the work right. My goal is to install the fence at the beginning of Spring, and my first step tonight is to watch the DVD which comes with the welder. The machine is heavy and I will buy the cart and a better helmet. Later on I might buy the gas tank to do other tasks around, and who knows, maybe my sons will learn to weld and make some bucks on the side using the machine. Thanks again, I first will be learning some more before making other questions, so far, this site have a lot to show and tell and I will be visiting it for a while. My best wishes.
Reply:My vote would be for the 180 as it will give you a longer duty cycle and more amps for larger projects. Buy it bigger the first time and you won't have to up grade down the road. The hobart handler 187 is also a good machine in that range .Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:welcome/congrats. remember that machine needs all the power it needs, so dont skimp on the gauge of the wire in the extension cord...it will run much better ona 20 amp circuit...and for gosh sake build a cart...
