Gas contamination

Whats up everyone,     New member here with a question. Has anybody heard of welding bottle contamination. Heres the story, I just got the tig welder I ordered today and I went to get an argon fill with a bottle that was originally argon co2 and the welding supply said that the gas would be contaminated if he filled it. Has anyone heard of this and would it really affect the weld it is only a DC machine and I am only going to be welding steel and occasionally some stainless. I am aware of the fact that you do have to use straight argon for tig. Any suggestions? Thanks.Anthony
Reply:Certainly the gas that is left in the bottle would be the mix gas. If straight argon is added, you will have some CO2 still in the bottle. The only way to avoid this would be to evacuate the bottle with a vacuum pump and break the vacuum with argon and then fill the bottle. I don't think you'll find anybody wanting to do that for you. To much work for them. Where I get my bottle filled they just swap me bottles. If where you go they fill your bottle then there wouldn't be a contamination problem from the equipment perspective because the gas is only going in one direction, into the bottle. I don't think it would cause any really bad problems with that small amount of CO2 but I haven't attempted it to tell you from first hand experience.
