I just bought a new lincoln 275 tig and was wanting some advice on wiring it.I need this welder to be moveable around my 50x100 shop, but lincoln's book that came with it says that it has to be wired with 3-4 awg wire with ridged conduit. This will make this completely unmoveable. It seems to me that if the welder comes with wheels it should travel.Does anybody have any suggestions or maybe has one of these welders that is wired a different way?Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Reply:Take it back and buy an inverter, or spend alot of money on a very, very heavy extension cord.  If you can get buy with a 200 amp inverter it only takes 30 amps.  But that probably is not what you wanted to hear.  The problem is I think that machine needs 100 amps when running wide open, and you need 4 awg to carry it.
Reply:You could make an extension cord out of a heavy 4/2+ ground cable...
Reply:Lincoln is referring to the main conduit line from the box to the outlet.  If your running 240v, the machine draws 94A at 275A output, 72 if you install the PFC caps.  And how often are you going to be asking for 275A?  I would just use #4 for the extension, keep it below 75 feet, and put an outlet on either wall with the hardline in it.  You should be able to reach anywhere within reason with that.  The V205 inverter is much more efficient, but the PT can deliver 340A full tilt, and supposedly has a better low end.  Its probably the machine I'm going to get.  4/2 is cheap purchased from electronics surplus.  There is a great one in Orlando, Fl- I bought 100 feet of 4/0 superflex in neoprene jacket for $175.Whats a day without flippin' like a trout?
Reply:Thanks, what is the stores name and phone#.I go that way all the time?
Reply:Skycraft surplus.  They are on Fairbanks Ave. just off of I 4.  PH# (407) 628- 5634.  Their stock is highly variable on most items, but they have a really good stock of wire, which they have in back.  Mostly NASA and aerospace industry surplus, if you can find out what the PFC cap values are for the PT 275, you can pick them up there too, for about $20 for a new pair, instead of $300.  You won't get the bracket (or the directions), but you can make the bracket yourself. As far as the directions go, perhaps one of our fellow listers can help us?Whats a day without flippin' like a trout?
