This will take awhile..Grooved roller for shingle manufacturing plant..As you can see the grooves are NOT all the same depth..But should be..First thing to do is strip the chrome plating off...010 thick..If you ever had the pleasure of manually stripping chrome then you know what a pain in the rear it is to do..You must "Get Underneeth" it or else carbide inserts or any tool for that matter dont have a snowballs chance in hell of survival..And once you do get to that point as it's coming off?The chrome "sprays" everywhere and makes a very abrasive mess over everything..So its tool guard time..Hint..If you ever do this make sure there is no lubrication on the bed ways..The oil will hold the chrome and eventually do a number on the ways..Clean everything real good before you begin and clean up is not that bad afterwards..Next clean out the grooves..You DO NOT weld over chrome!!If you do then you'll never machine the weld..It WILL get that hard..Next!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:What was the roller made of? What kind of filler did you use? How does filler metal selection affect chrome plateing?  Sory about all the questions.

Reply:Looks like you had fun zap, lol. I used to work in a shop like that many years ago. Every day was different, and we built some cool stuff. We used a similar setup for doing buildup on shafts and such. Used the head and chuck off of an old belt drive lathe with an old tig foot pedal for a speed controller. That's where I found out I liked heavy industrial repair and fabrication. Chrome is tough stuff. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:i agree with chrome being hard (as most chemists will as well). at one of the shops i used to work at, we used to get shafts "flash-chromed" and "diamond cased". that stuff is HARD!!! in order to prevent corrosion on some of the other stuff in the shop, the shipper would oil the parts... damn that stuff is slick... anyway, one of the other guys dropped an oiled piece, knocked a piece of diamond case off the cart, and sliced THRU his steel-toe boot. not safety toe, not dented the boot... CUT THRU IT!!!. 3" solid steel rod (mild), precision machined to +/- .0005", then machined into given lengths... needless to say, after that incident, our shop then required the edges be beveled/broke before shipment.side note: that piece was never damaged at all... the end that cut his boot was never even scratched, the other end hit the ground and took a crater out of the concrete. no one ever saw a scratch or chip in that piece... they measured it, made sure it was still within tolerance, and machined it.Later,Andy

Reply:That lathe looks like it has been around a while. What kind is it? What are you using to recut the grooves with? I have made a few V-Groove pulley's and had to grind a HS tool bit for the groove profile.
