Alright, Id like to hear what some of you guys are putting in your hoods.... Ive always had a 2X4 gold shade 11 in my hood. I also have a nexgen but I never use it. So for those of you still using non-auto lenses, what do you use? The gold treats me right but it kills me that its a randor china product. Ive heard the they have a poly version of the weldcool out, but Ive never found one for sale... are there any other types of filters worth looking through?
Reply:I prefer the glass variety without the gold mirror. I've got them in shades from 9-14 I think. I prefer glass cover plates some times as well, they seem to have a lot more clarity than the plastic ones. They don't last very long for anything but tig though. I've tried every auto lens on the market and I honestly don't like any of them more than the old fashion.
Reply:I use glass ...Standard 2x4 in the fibre metal pipeliner hood.Gold #10 for tig, #11 for stick - migI love the gold coloring...A very nice soothing color of the puddlue IMO1981 Lincoln SA 200Miller Trailblazer 302gMiller 211 Mig Welder w/ AutosetI'm learning to stick metal together

Reply:I use a gold 11 poly, and I stick 90 percent of the time and heli-arc the rest. It used to be shade 10 in the beginning, but 11 stopped the headaches. Ive seen guys wearing sunglasses under the hood. Not sure what thats about... I can see why glass is better. Theyre hard to come by around me. Airgas stocks their shelves with randor plastic and pretend like no one else makes filters. Ive seen a few US made clear poly and glass cover plates come out to jobs, but no one wants to carry that stuff on the shelves around here. I would have liked to try that weldcool blue lens. This place: http://www.phillips-safety.com/store...hp?cPath=41_66 has some gold glass and at least its made in germany....Ive used a cheater lens before but I burnt it up and never replaced it. I could give it another go though.

Reply:Miller 9400 for everything I do at work (95% tig).  Just got this helmet a few weeks ago, huge upgrade over my crappy Lincoln auto.Tomorrow I'll be trying out a 4x5 #10 gold for my pipe welding practice, looking forward to it.Does anyone know where "Anchor" welding glass is manufactured?
Reply:4x5" #12 or 14 glass.  I've tried a few of the plastic and everything has always looked wavy, so I stick with glass.
Reply:4x5 green lens shade 10 stick and tig from philips safety it is made in Germany and is extremely clear and help to ilimanate the flair of the arc. by far the best lens i have ever used and and still avalible alot of fellow welders who have tried my hood are now converts. i have used the old cool blues and they are a close comparison in the clarityAfter the arc has died the weld remains
Reply:those philips plates look nice, might try their gold one.
Reply:Originally Posted by Donald BranscomYes.... Lots of distortion. The plastic does not fog up as much in some conditions as glassBut once the glass is warmed up by your body heat it is fine.Since you are using a #11 glass i assume you are TIG welding Not MIG or STICK.Otherwise you would be using a 12 or 14 lens.To get better quality welds use a magnifier lens. A 150-175 Has nothing to do with age or eye condition. You can just see everything much better.Especially the weld pool.So clear (outside) - gold plate # ?  - then a magnifier (inside). The good set up.
Reply:#11 Gold. Thanks Tozzi!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:i use the German Pillips gold glass as well.... shade 11 for tig and stick
Reply:they are a very nice lens i have them down to a #8 for low amp tig welding.i havent tryed their gold one because i go threw too many of them due to the conditions im usually welding in.After the arc has died the weld remains
