I was wondering the best way to weld a differential carrier (no ,not the pider gears).I want to weld on case it self but i need to be able to machine it when i am done. Thanks
Reply:The process you are using is the big question..What are we using?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:either mig or stick...i might be able to get it tigged...but the other are what I have here. Thanks
Reply:Eather one will workI always tried to work with the oldest hand on the job to gain knowlege but now I can't find any.
Reply:Carrier , depending on the age is likely Nodular Iron, not to fear, good 7018 stick with a little preheat,or mild steel Mig wire also OK."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400
Reply:I read that it is" malleable iron (fine grain cast iron)" after i posted this...is this still weldable? Thanks
Reply:I wondered about this when I saw your post KAC,Unless this was a museum piece, trailer queen or off road machine I wouldn't fool with it. That said if your are repairing bearing diameters or differential pin holes, brazing would be the best of many unwise choices. Many people fool around with drivetrain and steering parts only later to find a liability problem and that the modification was unlawful.Matt
Reply:What exactly are we trying to do here, fix, beef up, change axle tubes? How about some more info and as always, pictures?"Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400

Reply:Originally Posted by KACI have a Dana 61 frt end...in order to put any lower gears in it(6.17)..I have to run a spacer between the ring rear and the carrier flange. That's not the problem...The ID of the ring gear.is a snug fit in its normal position, but with spacer is in there there is a gap between the Id of the ring gear and the Od of the carrier. This only lets the bolts center the gear on the carrier....I want to build it up some ..1/16 or so and machine it so the ring gear ist centered on the carrier
Reply:I have to shim the gear at least 5/16...too much for bearing shimming...I think the L shapped shim is the way to go...Thanks!
Reply:my "L" shaped spacer!
Reply:Looks like a real tidy job KAC!Are you trying to make up for real tall tires with the low gears?Matt
Reply:i want to run 39.5's..and be able to pound on it!!!I am only running a VW diesel for power! |
