Hi I am new to this great forum. Her is my question I am going to try to build a pipe fence with four runs of about 1'' pipe and 2 3/8 pipe post, Without a top rail what the best way to keep the top of your post straight ? do you run a string at the top or a measuring stick on the post when setting them ? I don know Thanks
Reply:Welcome coonhunter!  Where are you from? You could use either one. I would use a string line. The string would help keep the tops even, and with the stick, you'll follow the terrain. Are you going to cap the tops?  Good luck and post pics.

Reply:Its much easier to just run a line near the bottom or middle to keep the posts in line. That way, you can set a slightly longer post and cut them all off once they are set. This way, the posts won't move at all once they are set and you can experiment with different heights to see what looks better. Its tons faster in the long run.QamuIs Heg qaq law' lorvIs yInqaq puS

Reply:Since you said you're not using a toprail, my guess is that you are going to weld the 1" to the side of the 2 3/8"....be sure to weld the upper rail first, and use a level to plumb your posts as you weld them. Once the upper rail is welded your posts should stay plumb. As a sort of side note,(no pun intended), welding to the side of the post is ok....however, you don't have alot of surface to weld where the two pipes contact each other. If you plan to keep livestock in, or don't like rewelding broken joints, you might look into using weld on fence clips to secure your rails to the posts. They'll add a little cost to your project, but will save you some frustration in the long run. You should be able to find them at a local fence supplier, ag supply, etc. They are the only way to go when using sucker rod for fill material. Just my $.02........Be sure to post up some pics! Reply:I personally use the idea of lettin the tops of the pipe run wild and cutting and capping them , it might loose a few inches in the long run but hey its alot easier then tryin to set heigths and tryin to line them all up that way , i do use a string from the two end pieces on a straight run , the best way i have found to attach pipe is by using a piece of flat bar with the holes cut in it a little larger then the sucker rod , weld the plate to the edge of the pipe and slide the sucker rod through , thread the ends together and voila , cut to length weld the ends to the end post and your done , the reason for this is the pipes going into the ground can move with the ground when it freezes , the first one i built this way was done in 2003 , i have yet to go back and reweld anything , the time factor is a great way to get bids as well when your time is cut in almost half from everyone elses ... just my opinion oh and its alot easier then cuttin and measuring and cuttin and measurin lol make a jig cut all the plates the same length and your 3/4 done haha ill post a picture if i can find one .I forgot how to change this.
