Milling machine maintenance

This week I've been working on the cutter drum of the road mill that I run from April thru December. It wears itself out for a living. This is how I replace worn bit holders.1. Identify. 2. Gouge with plasma.3. Couple O whacks with BFH and off she goes. It was important not to gouge the roll pins & mating surface4. Plasma off remaining weld.5. Minimal grinding and ready to weld.Next post... Attached Images
Reply:6. Preheat to 200* F or so.7. Another preheat shot showing the bevel on the new holder.8. Root pass.9. Second and third passes.10. Big weave overtop, mostly for wear surface.Next... Attached Images

Reply:I thought you were refering to a "Bridgeport"...Milling Machine.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Yes David, it's dualshield  I did get it dialed in pretty well. Still not too sure about running it out of position though. I think I'd lose control of the puddle. I have only burned about 75 lbs of wire on it, mostly last winter.The drum has 252 bits @ something like $4.00 ea. and if running hard we can waste 'em easily in a day and have to change them all.

Reply:Me! ,  I should clarify that it is just the replaceable bits(not pictured) that can be worn out in a day not the weld-on parts.Burnit,  It's an image thing on the clean trucks. We are required to keep our company vehicles looking nice. Lots of competition out there! I don't drive a CDL truck every day anymore, but I do have a pickup to wash and wax. At least I can do that at home with a few cold onesIf anyone cares, I ran some dualshield out of position today and had very good results. I backed off one volt and 10% less wire speed and had a 12" scorpion tail of slag on a v-up stringer. Simple things make me happy.

Reply:Hey backuproller! How's it going? It took me 3 yrs to convince the co. to let me pull the drum. Up to that point I worked on it in the housing. Major suck. It comes out in a few hrs. Designed for "quick" change cutter widths.By the way the drying drum is done if you remember my first questions here. Sorry no pics, maybe later, but I had empty 50 # tins of 7018 laying around like beer cans after a pig roast.
