I've been looking to buy a used SAM 400 perkins,     I've tried a few out from big outfits selling them off, probally because the machines are getting worn out.       Seems the ones I've looked at seem to have similar problems.     They seem to have about half to three quarters the amount of output they should.     Also when stick welding w/ them, they have an unstable arc.    The more amps or bigger the rod, the more noticable and worse the arc flucuation gets.    One was so bad that it sounded like popcorn poppping when running 7018.   I looked at the armature on that one, it didn't have any burnt bars.    Another ones wild popping arc wasn't as severe yet, however your only getting about two thirds the amps of output that the scale on the control panel indicates.     It's armature and brushes looked fine also.        I know we can't diagnose the problem on by what I've described.     But does anyone know of anything that commonly went out or defective on these models that would cause these problems described?    The machines I've tested ranger from the years of mid 80s to early 90s.     Also is anyone aware of any key parts that aren't any longer available to buy?   The engines ran fine on all them, problems were definately in the generator.     The low output desribed, is present in the constant voltage mode also.
Reply:Well, lets change the question a bit.    The biggest problem is the weldability in stick mode.     When running 7018 3/32 and 1/8 inch, you don't really notice much problem w/ arc.   When using 5/32 and 3/16, it sounds almost like its's welding back and forth from DC to AC about every second, molten slag flys everwhere.    Mysterious enough the bead doesn't really show much deformity after removing slag until your to a 3/16 to 7/32 rod.     Now I've tested 3 or 4 of these, they seem to innershield O K, but the stick welding is consistant w/ all of them how I've described.     Anyone out there worked anywhere or used these for any stick welding?       Also I'm starting to wonder if Lincoln put all the effort into making it good for welding CV machine, and figured with a little more effort, we can put a CC selector mode swith on it.
Reply:Is this a AC-DC welder? Is the problem only in DC? Are there capacitors in the unit? One or more may be bad.
Reply:its engine driven, DC only
Reply:What vintage are they?Could be a number of things causing problemsMay not be set up properlyThey did have there fair share of problemsSeems strange that you have tried different machines with similar problems.
Reply:Might seem like a really dumb solution, or cause, but are the leads hooked up to the proper terminals on the lead bar? ( up by the fuel tank, under the door)  What you are describing sounds kind of like the welder is set up properly on the face, CC switch and polarity switch are where they are supposed to be, but the leads are hooked to the ground and feeder terminal, rather than ground and electrode terminal...  The feeder terminal is supposed to give you better welding characteristics when using an LN22 or 23, I have not noticed any change when running my 22 or 25 on my electrode terminal.  So, I wonder why they had a feeder terminal anyway?  My miller 55 has one as well, but I have not put a feeder on it to see if there is a difference.  Anyway, I dont have any of these issues with my SAM.  The only problem I have ever had was about once a year, I gotta blow it out, hood off, shields off, front face off, etc.  The welder will still have AC output, but loses the welding side as the contacts get dusty.  PITA, but a pretty simple fix.  My SAM is the most reliable welder I have owned.  Its an 79 model, came out of Peter Kewitts Alaska pipeline work.  Had 2000 hours on it, about 3000 now.   What other problems did they have?  Mine has a detroit, waited a long time for the detroit as most I see are perkins and bedford diesels.
Reply:my welder generates electricity but does not weld the feild coils read 10ohm from the brown wire to blue. anny ideas?
