........welding game I thought it would be interesting to see how many shop and how many site welders there is here and maybe a very brief outline of the type of work and the type of welding you do.90 to 95% of my work is site both new and repair on piping. Sizes range from 2" to 24" mainly carbon welded to ASME 9 with a TIG root, sometimes a wee bit of Stainless.   Sites go from refineries to dairy factories to fuel tank farms with a bit of refridgiration and steam thrown in.I work away from home about ten months of the year (always try to get one job a year at home).Cheers
Reply:I do Architectural Design, but I have a lil old shop  that I run to to keep from going postal. The one place where I am the master of my domain. Toys? H-F metal chop saw, Victor O/A torch set, 2 Lincoln wire feed welders, vice, clamps, grinders, drill press, etc. the usual. And always looking for a new project to start and not finish.
Reply:I'm a welder by trade, started doing the pipefitter thing, really like it, going back to it soon.  In the meantime I contract jobs around.  My brother in law finds a lot of our work, but sometimes I get it from friends or through friends.  All word of mouth.  Mostly SMAW on my bobcat.  We do everything from ornamental gates and railings to work on semi trailers and heavy equipment.  Have done work on the equipment at one of them log cabin sites.  Have worked in a shop building sawmill equipment.  And do other odd job repairs.  Tools include but not limited to portaband, torch, bobcat welding machine, chop saw, grinders, ect.  Work is good money is better CHRIS

Reply:Wirehunt, at work I weld in bracketry and mounting tabs to mount electrical componets and lighting fixtures to the internals of illuminated signs.  It consists of mig and stick both mild steel and aluminum.  Do the majority of the welding at home for my own projects of repair and building my own tools\jigs\fixtures for my own use and pleasure with a small share of side jobs in the neighborhood.  Have done the fab shop and traveling welder thing years ago and over the last 10yrs or so have decided to go the local job location route as now I prefer to stay close to home.A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter   Victor O/A
Reply:I am a  journeyman steel fabricator and weld when I am forced to :'))   Most of our work is related to docks and marine.  We just finished up pile driving hammer filled with lead.  Someone outside the shop filled the interior with lead.  Total weight is 12,000 pounds.  A couple of years ago we did a 3000 ton hydraulic press for bending pipe.  The sample piece done proir to delivery was two inch wall and around three feet diameter.  It impressed us all.  The customer knew what he wanted and we obliged.  We primarily use metal cored wire.
