Can anybody tell me what is more appropriate for welding 6061 to 6061 and 5052 to 5052?  Strength and ductility are not very important concerns in this case, but I'd like to clear anodize the finished project and I'd like to know if either 5356 or 4043 filler will blend in best (appearance-wise) with the base metal.  I'm using a spool gun and 75Ar-25He.  Thanks.
Reply:The 4043 will be the easiest to weld with because of the silicon this makes the puddle more fluid and will not be to crack sensitive on the 6061. But on the 5356 Al it will cause cracking do to the formation of Mg Silicide you get the magnesium from the 5356 Al. so go with the 4043 for filler on both alloys it is the most comonly used if you are not looking for the full strength. But on the other hand for apperance I Tig with 5356 because I can get a better bead profile with it but for a spool gun I would use the 4043. good luck
Reply:Well said Chase.......
Reply:Thank you, gentlemen, 4043 it is.  I also agree about tigging, i like the 5356 bead better.
