I won a design competition 4 months ago (I posted about it a while back), and have been building a bicycle rack to honor Gil Morris and his son Ted, who owned a bicycle shop in the neighborhood for 50 years, was a founder the Louisville bicycle club and who both recently passed away.  They had an dedication ceremony and unveiling today, and I finally got a chance to get a few pictures.I forgot to take pictures of the welds before I got it powdercoated, but I took one anyway. All pictures & designs Copyright 2007 Patrick Joyce Attached ImagesLast edited by PatrickJ; 10-06-2007 at 02:14 PM.PatrickLincoln 175HD

Reply:PatrickJ,Thank you for posting those pictures.I do design and construct also but in a very different field and medium, a project like that has 4 very important elements.Functionality ............does it work?, does it work well?, is it easy to use ? , Ascetics ..................does it look good?, does it add to the environment or detract?Craftsmanship............is it well made?Structural integrity ....is it strong enough both short and long term in a public environment? You friend, have nailed all four. Not only that it is obvious what it is, thats also important. Congratulations , you should and must be proud of your achievement.A few Questions: It looks like a colour we have over here called "Silver Glo Pearl" is it?Did you use a warrantied powder coat, 7/10 , 10 , 15 , 20 year?Is it powder coated mild steel, if so did you galvanize  then coat? Are you concerned about corrosion? Again thank you for posting those pictures, they made my day.BrettLast edited by Brett; 10-06-2007 at 04:30 PM.A good guess is better than a bad measurement

Reply:I remember your previous post, I think, and I offered to steal the design. Man, I really wish I had followed through. What a nice piece!Funny thing, my kids both need a rack now that our pool is taking up the back yard. Maybe I will have to build it. Reply:Hey, nice job Patrick. Very cool design. I'm just catching up after being awol for a couple of weeks.  If you don't mind answering how much does a piece like that cost to get powder coated?  and did who did it?  I am just starting a power rack (wieght lifting) for my sons and I am considering different finishes.  I have seen Craftsmen advertise a powder coating gun for about $100.00, has anybody used one like it?Last edited by GLwelder; 10-20-2007 at 09:42 AM.
Reply:I remember when you posted the scale model. I thought it was cool then. Now with the obvious time and skill you have into it I know it's cool. Verry well done.My Photos on Flickr

Reply:Very nice work...I love the simplicity of the design. You should patent that design and try and drum up some customers on a larger scale.
Reply:Sweet rack, nice design. I remember that post and it's good to see the final product.  That should serve the community well for many years and I'm sure that Mr. Morris would be proud of your accomplishment.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene

Reply:Thanks, everyone.  The powdercoating cost me $250 for sandblasting the color (Speedboat Aluminum III), and a clear coat.  L&D powdercoating in Lagrange, Kentucky (15 miles outside of Louisville) is who did it, they do a really good job if you're in the neighborhood.  I thought about doing it myself, but it would have taken too long to build an oven big enough.I built the Got Trikes bender, and modified it to use the HF Air/Hydraulic Jack.  It works fantastic, and only cost me $550 total with the die, versus ~$750 for a manual one with the stand, die and shipping.  I also bought the Pro Line ring roller from Tool America, for $160.11 shipped, you can't beat it.  My 9 year old stepdaughter rolled one of the wheels out of 1/4"x2" flat stock. Reply:Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just HAD to say major kudos on that rack, that is a stroke of pure genius.  I LOVE it!!  I am thinking of making one just for the backyard (I revamp old BMX bikes, and they are everywhere), but now I'm thinking of rethinking my original thinking (lol).  Beautiful work, I hope you made a lot on that job, you sure deserve it!
