Hi,I've been MIG welding with 2 and 5 lb rolls of copper-coated ER70S-6 wire for a couple of years and have always wondered if the fumes from the copper coating on this wire presents a significant health hazard.  I've spoken to some folks who claim that, since all mild steel contains copper, there is no appreciable difference between copper-coated and non copper-coated MIG wire in terms of the harmful fumes generated. So - does anyone want to weigh in on this?  Also, I haven't been able to find ANY non copper-coated MIG rolls less than 35 lbs.  Given that I have a Millermatic 251 (no external spool unit) and I am a hobby welder, 35 lbs is too big.  Anyone know of a place that sells non copper-coated MIG ER70S-6 wire in smaller roll sizes? Thanks in advance,Ian
Reply:The first thing I would do is look for a MSDS (materials safety data sheet) from the welding wire manufacturer. I dont know if it will answer your question but I assume they are governmentally required for this type health and safety concern.
Reply:there amountof copper on the wire is soo little theres no way.  The copper will vaporize therfore lending to it to go into the atmosphere. However, unless you stick your face down into the weld, you shouldnt be breathing enough into cause any  trouble.  And if you are sticking your face downinto the weld, well there a lot of other thigns in that flume to get you .  Good luck"CHRIS
Reply:Good point. I know it's bad but I sometimes weld on galvanized pipe. But when I do I hold my breath and exhale and inhale after each run in "fresh air" I assume. My point is even when I weld mild steel I still have a habit of holding my breath. Is that good, bad or doesn't matter?
Reply:dont matter,  prolly a good habit...just dont hold it too long  lolCHRIS
Reply:I agree but I dont see how it would be able to hold your breath on very long passes 4-12 ft for example. i think it is imporant to avoid any vapors or fumes. Just get used to holding your head out of the smoke. make a habit of it. your lungs will thank you. I stress this because new welders have a habit of getting to close to see better and it is hard to break this habit. If with a nice clean hood after a few passes its covered with smoke you may be getting too close or holding head directly above your weld area.
Reply:I have a MM251 and have a roll of non copper coated wire in it that is 44 lb.A 35 pound roll should fit unless you just don't want that much wire.
