I have gotten the vertical up welding down pretty good now.  I have been working with .083 mild steel with .025 solid wire.  I now have to weld a piece of .083 to some thinner gauge material like .025 - .030.  My question is what would be the correct side to side movement to prevent burn through on the thinner material?  I would like to wash the metal onto the thin side, but when welding vertical up if I do not give the same amount of time on each side I think I will get too small of a bead on the thin material.  Do you understand what I mean? Thanks in advance!Mike
Reply:I'm thinking that even tho you'll probably be set just a little cool for the quarter wall you'll still be a little high for the .083 so that's going to be your problem, too wet on that side. You're going to want to hold on the thicker side just to get the penetration, yes, but when you weave to the thin side it's going to be a little hot so you'll have to move quicker. Remember there isn't much reason to have the bead much stronger than required for the thinnest material, ie, there's no real benefit in having a big fat bead up against the thinner side. So I'm thinking you'll have a bead profile (triangle) where one foot is longer than the other by a tenth--------no big deal. Looking at your last results it'll come out fine.
Reply:Hey Sandy,Thanks for the information.I decided to do some test welds to see how the welding would work out.  I ended up using a circular motion vertical up moving upwards into the thick metal and downwards onto the thin metal and I was able to get a uniform bead on both sides with no burn through.I forgot to bring my camera to the shop today, so I will post some photos next week so others can see the results. Thanks again!Mike
